Chapter 8 - The Blueprint of Shadows

"If my mother lived here, why did she pretend she didn't?"

"Because the house doesn't let go of anyone once their blood touches the foundation."

"That's folklore nonsense. Houses are wood and drywall, not living entities."

"Tell that to the video camera, Arthur. Explain the timestamp."

"There has to be a rational explanation for the digital corruption."

"Rational? Like the architectural blueprints hidden behind the basement wall?"

"What blueprints? What are you talking about?"

The stranger reached into her coat pocket, pulling out a rolled-up cylinder of thick, yellowed architectural paper tied with a faded red ribbon. She tossed it casually onto the sofa beside Maya. The little girl jumped, hugging her knees to her chest, while Thomas instinctively stepped in front of her. The stranger did not advance; she simply stood in the doorway, her silhouette framed by the dim light of the corridor, looking like an executioner waiting for the drop.

"When you bought this house, Arthur, you waived the independent structural inspection to save five thousand dollars," the woman said, her voice dripping with quiet sarcasm. "A classic corporate move. Fast, efficient, and entirely blind to hidden liabilities."

Arthur clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white. "I am a structural engineer. I inspected the load-bearing pillars myself."

"Did you inspect the sub-basement?" the woman countered instantly. "The twenty-foot cavity directly beneath the living room floorboards—the one sealed off with concrete in nineteen-eighty-two, right after the second owner vanished?"

Elena turned to Arthur, her eyes burning with betrayal. "You never told me there was a sub-basement. You said the foundation was solid slab!"

"It is a slab house, according to the public zoning maps," Arthur shot back defensively, though a bead of cold sweat rolled down his temple. "There shouldn't be any cavity beneath us."

"And yet," Thomas interjected, his voice grim as he picked up the rolled blueprint from the sofa and untied the red ribbon, "according to these hand-drawn additions... the sub-basement spans the entire footprint of the house. And it was built with a very specific purpose."

Thomas unrolled the heavy paper across the coffee table, pushing aside the broken glass and the leather ledger. The blue-and-white ink lines revealed a complex schematic of the home—not just the two stories above ground, but a labyrinthine network of rooms beneath the earth, complete with soundproofed walls, ventilation shafts that led nowhere, and a single, central chamber marked with a heavy red X.

Maya leaned over her grandfather's shoulder, her small finger pointing directly at the red X on the blueprint. "Grandpa, what's that room for? It looks like a giant camera lens."
