Chapter 5 - The Silver Key

"Where did that key come from? None of us were near the table!"

"It wasn't there a minute ago. I'm looking right at the table on the camera!"

"Arthur, pick it up. We need to know what it unlocks."

"Are you insane? We don't touch unknown objects after what just happened!"

"Mom, look! The key is glowing on the screen, but it's not glowing on the table!"

"What do you mean it's glowing?"

"The digital overlay... it's casting a blue light through the lens!"

The living room felt less like a modern suburban home and more like the set of a psychological thriller. The silver key lay on the dark mahogany wood, no larger than a standard diary lock, yet it seemed to anchor the oppressive atmosphere of the entire room. Arthur slowly set Maya down on the sofa, whispering for her to stay put with her grandfather. He stepped cautiously toward the coffee table, his eyes fixed on the tiny metallic object.

Elena followed closely behind him, her hands trembling as she pointed a finger at the camera screen still held by Thomas. "Look at the viewfinder, Arthur. The key on the screen... it has numbers engraved on the bow. But when you look at it with your bare eyes, the metal is completely smooth."

Arthur leaned down, squinting under the bright recessed lights. He didn't touch the key yet, but he brought his face within inches of it. Sure enough, the physical surface of the silver key was blank, polished to a mirror finish. Yet on the camera's LCD screen, glowing with an eerie, computer-generated cyan hue, a distinct sequence of five digits was clearly visible stamped into the metal: 7-4-2-9-1.

"A code," Arthur muttered, his breath ghosting over the table. "A combination or an address number."

"It's the old safe in the basement," Thomas said suddenly, his voice cutting through the tension like a razor. The old man stepped forward, his eyes sharp and focused. "The wall safe behind the wooden shelving unit in my old study. The one your grandfather installed back in the seventies."

Elena turned to Thomas, her red hair swaying. "Thomas, your old study hasn't been used in a decade. Why would a key to that safe appear upstairs in the living room?"

"Because it's not a key to the safe," a cold, unfamiliar voice echoed from the dark doorway of the hallway.

Everyone whipped around. Standing at the threshold was a middle-aged woman none of them had invited to the party—a woman with striking silver-streaked hair, wearing a tailored black coat, holding a heavy leather-bound ledger under her arm. She smiled thinly, her eyes locking onto Arthur with chilling familiarity.
