Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

"Who are you? How did you get into this house?"
"Doors tend to remain unlocked when people are too busy arguing with ghosts."
"Get out of my house right now, or I will call the police."
"Go ahead, Arthur. Dial the numbers. Let's see if the dispatcher recognizes your address."
"Elena, call 911. Do it now."
"I wouldn't do that, Mrs. Vance. Your phone line has been dead for twenty minutes."
"That's impossible, I checked my mobile five minutes ago... wait, no service?"
The sudden realization hit the room like a physical blow. Arthur pulled his smartphone from his pocket, his thumb swiping frantically across the screen. The signal bars were completely gray, topped with a small, mocking triangle warning: No Service. He looked up, his jaw set in a hard line, stepping defensively between the stranger and his family. Maya whimpered, clutching Thomas’s blazer even tighter, while Elena backed toward the kitchen entryway, her eyes wide with mounting panic.
"Who are you?" Arthur repeated, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a raw, threatening edge. "And what do you want with my family?"
The woman stepped fully into the light of the living room, her tailored black coat smelling faintly of rain and old paper. She ignored Arthur entirely, her gaze drifting past him to fix upon the shattered glass horse on the coffee table, and then down to the silver key resting beside it. A dark, knowing smile touched the corners of her thin lips.
"You call it an heirloom," the woman said smoothly, her voice carrying a clipped, northeastern accent. "Arthur Vance, the brilliant young executive who believes he built his entire life from scratch through sheer corporate grit. You bought this house five years ago. You thought you got a steal on the real estate market, didn't you?"
Arthur narrowed his eyes. "What are you talking about? Our mortgage is legitimate. We bought it from an estate sale."
"An estate sale," the woman laughed softly, a dry, humorless sound. "That is one word for it. Let's call it a liquidation. The previous owner didn't die of natural causes, Arthur. He vanished. Just like the woman who lived here before him. And the family before that."
Elena stepped forward, her maternal instincts overriding her fear. "Stop talking in riddles! If you're a reporter, or a stalker, or whatever sick game this is—leave us alone! My daughter is right here!"
May you like
The stranger’s eyes snapped toward Elena, flashing with a sudden, intense coldness that made the red-haired woman flinch. "Your daughter shouldn't even exist, Mrs. Vance. According to the registry, this house doesn't permit children. In fact, every single family that has tried to raise a child within these walls has met a very specific, structural end."
