Chapter 8 - The Drive to Route 9

The engine of Mark’s sedan roared to life in the dark driveway, casting long, sweeping beams of yellow light across the manicured suburban lawns. Inside the car, the dashboard clock glowed a menacing 3:42 AM. The heavy, matte-black encrypted hard drive sat in the passenger seat next to him, wrapped in a layer of insulating thermal foam just like the tape had instructed.
Mark’s hands gripped the leather steering wheel so tightly his fingers were entirely numb. The blue button-up shirt clung to his damp back, the dried red stain on his sleeve catching the emerald glow of the radio dial. He was running on pure adrenaline and blind, unadulterated terror. Behind him, inside the darkened house, Vanessa and Lily were locked behind the reinforced deadbolts, watching him leave through the upstairs bedroom window—or rather, watching him through the digital blind spot where the torn-down security camera used to be.
He put the car into drive and pulled away from the curb, his tires crunching softly over the asphalt.
The streets of the subdivision were entirely deserted, the suburban stillness feeling less like peace and more like a ghost town. Streetlights flickered overhead as he passed, casting an intermittent, sickly yellow glow across his dashboard. Route 9 was ten miles away—a desolate stretch of two-lane highway that cut through the dense industrial wetlands bordering the municipal water treatment facility.
As Mark accelerated down the highway, the rhythmic thrum of the tires against the pavement filled the cabin, serving as a bleak metronome counting down the minutes of his former life. He glanced over at the hard drive resting on the passenger seat. Three terabytes of classified drone-targeting algorithms and municipal grid diagnostics. Data that could alter the geopolitical landscape if it fell into the wrong hands—or poison the water supply of half a million innocent citizens if dropped into intake valve four.
He knew the extortionists were bluffing about some things, but the federal cyber-commanders were a very real threat. If Lily’s IP address was flagged, her life was effectively over before it had even begun. She would be tried as an adult under the Patriot Act amendments, buried beneath a mountain of classified evidence she couldn't possibly understand, let alone defend against.
A sharp, high-pitched tone chimed from the car’s built-in navigation system.
“Recalculating route,” the automated voice announced coolly.
Mark frowned, glancing down at the center console screen. The GPS map had automatically updated itself, overriding his destination input. Instead of Route 9, the glowing blue line on the screen was directing him down a narrow, unpaved logging road that wound its way up into the dense pine forests behind the water treatment plant.
"What the hell?" Mark muttered, hitting the touchscreen to cancel the route.
The screen flickered violently, the display turning entirely black for a fraction of a second before flashing a single, blinking line of green text across the glass: OVERRIDE ACCEPTED. PROCEED TO CHECKPOINT ALPHA.
Mark slammed his foot on the brakes, the car skidding slightly on the damp asphalt before coming to a jarring halt in the middle of the dark highway. He threw the car into park, his heart hammering against his ribs. Someone had hacked his vehicle's onboard cellular diagnostics unit. They weren't just watching him through home cameras and manipulating his daughter's phone; they were actively driving him.
He reached across the console to grab the hard drive, intending to kill the engine, get out, and throw the device into the dense woods by the side of the road.

Before his fingers could wrap around the foam-wrapped casing, the car’s headlights instantly snapped off, plunging the highway into absolute, pitch-black darkness. Simultaneously, every single door lock on the sedan clicked downward with a synchronized, mechanical thud, trapping him inside.
