Chapter 11 - The Face in the Office Mirror

The photographs fluttered against Mark’s trembling fingertips like dying moths. He stared down at the glossy prints under the sickly yellow halogen light, his brain refusing to process the images spread out before him.
In every single photo, Vanessa sat comfortably in the leather chair of his home office. Her dark hair was pinned back in its familiar bun, her posture relaxed and practiced. In one frame, her eye was aligned perfectly with the biometric retinal scanner built into his secure workstation terminal. In another, she was sliding the matte-black encrypted hard drive into a leather briefcase bearing Mark’s initials.
"No," Mark whispered, his voice cracking violently as he backed away until his shoulders hit the corrugated metal wall of the shed. "No, this is a fabrication. You deepfaked these. You altered the metadata."
"Look closer at the timestamp on the bottom corner of frame four, Mark," Vance said calmly, his voice devoid of mockery, sounding almost weary. "That was the night of your wedding anniversary. You were downstairs cutting cake with Lily and the baby. Your wife excused herself for twenty minutes to 'check on the laundry upstairs.' She didn't check the laundry. She executed a full mainframe mirror download while your biometric signature was still cached in the terminal memory from your afternoon shift."
Mark shook his head frantically, his light brown hair clinging to his damp forehead. The blue button-up shirt felt suffocatingly tight across his chest, restricting his breathing until spots danced before his eyes. "Why? Why would Vanessa do that? She has nothing to do with defense contracting! She’s a pediatric nurse at the county hospital!"
"Is she?" Vance raised an eyebrow, walking over to the folding table and tapping the screen of the open laptop. With a few swift keystrokes, he brought up a secure federal personnel file.
Mark squinted at the glowing screen. Staring back at him from a high-resolution identification badge was a younger version of Vanessa—hair loose, wearing the crisp, dark uniform of a military intelligence operative. Her name on the badge wasn't Vanessa Miller. It was Vanessa Sterling—a deep-cover sleeper agent who had been flagged as inactive following the closure of the Blackwood Intelligence Initiative fifteen years ago.
"She was our best operative in the Eastern European sector," Vance said quietly, leaning against the edge of the metal table. "When the program was shuttered, operatives were given new identities, clean slates, and strict instructions to integrate into civilian life. Most of them stayed retired. Vanessa... apparently decided she had unfinished business with the agency that dropped her off the payroll."
Mark felt the ground drop out from beneath his feet. Fourteen years of marriage. Two children. A house in the suburbs, Sunday dinners, soccer games, quiet evenings on the back patio—all of it laid bare as an elaborate, carefully constructed operational cover story.
"She didn't steal Project Vanguard to sell it to brokers," Vance continued, his slate-grey eyes fixed steadily on Mark. "She stole it to build a localized communications grid—using the municipal water system as a decentralized server network—so she could reactivate every dormant sleeper cell in the tri-state area. And she used your security clearance as the diplomatic shield to keep us from looking at your house."
Mark gripped the edge of the metal table to keep from collapsing, his knees shaking uncontrollably. The red stain on his blue shirt suddenly seemed like a tragic prophecy—the blood of a life that had never actually existed.
Before Mark could process the overwhelming horror of the revelation, the laptop on the table beeped sharply. A new window popped up automatically, displaying a live video feed originating from the security camera inside his kitchen—the very camera Mark had ripped from the drywall less than an hour ago.

On the screen, Vanessa stood in the center of the kitchen, staring directly into the lens. But she wasn't alone. Standing beside her, holding the crying baby in one arm and pointing a suppressed pistol directly at Lily's head, was a man Mark had never seen before in his life.
