Chapter 7 - The Voice of the Handler

The high-pitched whine from the microcassette tape cut through Mark and Vanessa’s argument like a razor blade. Both of them froze, staring down at the analog device as the tiny internal reels began to spin automatically inside their clear plastic casing. There was no tape player nearby, yet the magnetic ribbon was moving, drawing power from an internal battery source wired directly into the cardboard backing of the envelope.
A burst of heavy static crackled from the tape, filling the kitchen with an abrasive, hissing roar before resolving into a crisp, impeccably clear human voice—smooth, cultured, and dripping with an icy, mocking amusement.
"Good evening, Mr. Miller. I trust you found the welcome package to your liking."
Mark stepped toward the table, his eyes narrowing as he stared down at the spinning cassette. "Who is this? Give me a name. If you're running an operation out of Langley or Fort Meade, state your division right now or I swear to God I'll walk this drive straight to the FBI field office myself."
The voice on the tape let out a low, synthesized chuckle that sent a shiver down Mark’s spine.
"The FBI, Mark? How delightfully naive. The Bureau closed its investigation into Project Vanguard six months ago, right around the time your department was quietly classified under 'national security restructuring.' You don't work for a civilian defense contractor anymore. You haven't for a very long time."
Vanessa gripped the edge of the kitchen island, her knuckles turning bone-white. She looked at Mark with wide, accusing eyes. "What is he talking about, Mark? What aren't you telling me about your job?"
"It's a lie," Mark snapped, though his voice lacked conviction, trembling ever so slightly as he glared at the spinning tape. "He's trying to psychological-op us. Don't listen to him, Vanessa."
"Is it a lie, Mark?" the tape continued smoothly, ignoring his interruption. "Shall we ask Mrs. Miller about the offshore accounts registered under her maiden name in Zurich? Or perhaps we should discuss the quarterly 'consulting fees' deposited into an educational trust fund for Lily—funds that conveniently bypassed Apex Technologies' internal compliance audits entirely?"
Vanessa gasped, stumbling backward until her spine hit the pantry door. She stared at Mark, her face draining of every drop of blood. "You... you set up accounts in Zurich? Mark, what have you been doing behind my back?"
"I didn't—I never touched those funds!" Mark stammered, stepping toward his wife, holding his hands out in a desperate, pleading gesture. "Vanessa, listen to me! I swear on my life I didn't open any Swiss accounts! That’s standard corporate framing—they’re building a paper trail to pin the leak on me!"
"A paper trail that leads straight to your biometric signature, Mark," the tape purred, the reels spinning faster as the magnetic ribbon drew to its final seconds. "Which brings us to your current dilemma. You have forty-five minutes to take the encrypted hard drive currently sitting on your kitchen table, drive it down to the municipal water treatment facility on Route 9, and drop it into primary intake valve four. Failure to comply will result in an immediate data dump to federal prosecutors, charging your daughter with industrial terrorism and your wife with corporate embezzlement. Tick-tock, Mr. Miller."
The cassette let out a sharp click, followed by a sudden puff of acrid, grey smoke as a small internal thermal fuse blew itself out, destroying the tape beyond recovery.
The kitchen fell into a suffocating, absolute silence.
Mark stood frozen, his chest heaving, the red stain on his blue shirt looking like a target painted over his heart. Vanessa stared at him, the trust in her eyes entirely eradicated, replaced by a cold, calculating fear. On the floor, Lily pulled her knees to her chest, whispering incoherent apologies over and over again.

Mark reached out slowly and picked up the encrypted hard drive from the table. Its matte-black casing felt impossibly heavy in his palm. He looked at Vanessa, knowing that if he walked out that door to comply with the extortionists, he might never return as a free man—and if he stayed, his family would be destroyed before the sun rose.
