Chapter 6: Dismantling the Tower

Over the next three months, Elena became an indispensable anchor in the Vance household.
Every Tuesday and Thursday evening, after completing her twelve-hour trauma shifts at Children’s Memorial, Elena would arrive at the Gold Coast brownstone.
The museum atmosphere dissolved.
The mahogany dining table became covered in colored construction paper, clay models, and ASL flashcards. Elena taught Ethan and Mia together, turning language acquisition into a shared, joyful game.
Ethan was a disciplined student. Every night after Mia went to sleep, the corporate titan sat in his study with an ASL dictionary, practicing finger spelling until his tendons ached.
One evening in late February, while Ethan was helping Elena prepare a simple pasta dinner in the kitchen, Mia walked in carrying a large watercolor painting.
She held it up proudly for both of them to see.
The painting showed three figures standing beneath a massive yellow sun: a tall man in a black jacket, a woman in navy scrubs with open hands, and a little girl in a yellow dress holding both of their hands. Above their heads, painted in gold glitter, was the ASL symbol for *“F-A-M-I-L-Y.”*
Ethan looked at the painting, then looked at Elena.
Elena’s face softened, a delicate blush warming her cheeks as she looked into Ethan’s eyes.
The unspoken connection between them had grown far beyond professional consulting. It was a mutual, profound reverence born of shared devotion to a child who had brought them both back to life.
"She has an extraordinary eye, Ethan," Elena whispered.

"She sees what's real," Ethan replied softly, his gaze never leaving Elena’s face.
