Chapter 4: The Sound of Green Grapes

It was past 1:00 AM when the executive sedan pulled up to the curb outside Elena’s apartment building in Logan Square.

The building was a modest, four-story red-brick walkup with iron fire escapes.

Ethan stepped out into the cool lake wind, walking Elena to the front entryway. In the back seat of the car, Mia was fast asleep, wrapped in Ethan’s black cashmere overcoat.

"Thank you, Elena," Ethan said, standing on the concrete stoop. "For tonight. For Mia."

"You don't have to thank me for being human, Ethan," Elena smiled, pulling her wool cardigan tighter around her scrubs. "Mia is a brilliant, observant child. She reads room micro-expressions faster than most adults. But she is lonely. The gala world is loud, even for people who can hear."

Ethan looked at his leather shoes, then up into her clear, honest eyes.

"I don't know how to do this alone anymore, Elena," he admitted. For a man who managed twenty thousand employees and a global investment portfolio, speaking those words was an act of terrifying vulnerability. "I can navigate a corporate hostile takeover in an afternoon, but when Mia cries in her bedroom at night and I don't know what her fingers are saying... I feel like an absolute failure as a father."

Elena reached out, her hand resting briefly and reassuringly on his forearm.

"You aren't a failure, Ethan. You're just a father who has been carrying a mountain with one hand," Elena said softly. "If you want, I can come by on Saturday mornings. Not as an employee. Just as a friend who knows how to build bridges out of signs."

Ethan felt a sudden, profound release in his chest—a feeling of light entering a room that had been boarded shut for years.

"Saturday," Ethan nodded. "I’ll have the grapes ready."
