Chapter 14: The Ring of Cedar and Light

In late June, they returned to the timber-framed estate in Lake Geneva.

At twilight, as the sun dipped behind the pines, painting the calm water in brilliant shades of apricot, violet, and gold, Ethan led Elena down to the end of the wooden dock.

The air smelled of sweet water, pine needles, and wild honeysuckle.

Mia sat on the grassy bank thirty yards away, holding a jar of fireflies, watching them with a wide, knowing smile.

Ethan turned to Elena, taking both of her hands in his.

He did not speak verbally.

With slow, reverent, and perfectly articulated American Sign Language, Ethan signed:

*“Elena... two years ago, you walked across a cold marble floor and gave my daughter her life back. Then, you gave me mine. You showed us that true strength is gentle, and that a home is built with open hands. I don't want to walk another step of this life without you. Will you marry me?”*

He reached into his pocket and produced a simple, elegant ring forged from rose gold and set with a raw green tourmaline—the color of the lake in the summer sun.

Elena’s eyes filled with tears, her breath catching in her throat.

She looked at the ring, then looked up into the honest, devoted eyes of the man who had learned an entire language just to love his family rightly.

Elena brought her hands up, her fingers trembling with profound joy, and signed:

*“Yes. A thousand times, yes.”*

From the bank, Mia let out a joyful squeal, set her firefly jar in the grass, and sprinted down the wooden dock, launching herself straight into their arms.

Ethan caught her with one arm, pulling Elena close with the other, the three of them holding each other in the golden twilight as the stars began to emerge over the quiet water.
