Chapter 5

The heavy metal pipe glinted under the harsh light of the office ceiling, casting long, menacing shadows across the walls.

The waitress backed away slowly until her lower back pressed hard against the locked filing cabinet, her breath catching in her throat.

She knew she had stumbled onto something far bigger than a petty restaurant dispute; she had uncovered a criminal real estate conspiracy.

The guard took a slow, deliberate step forward, his heavy boots crunching against the dust on the floorboards.

"Smart girls don't dig into things that don't concern them," the guard rumbled, lowering his voice into a dangerous, calculated threat. "Hand over the folder, and maybe you walk out of here with just a warning."

Instead of cowering, the waitress scanned the cluttered desk, her eyes locking onto a heavy glass paperweight shaped like a vintage coffee pot.

With a sudden burst of adrenaline, she snatched the glass object and hurled it directly at the wall-mounted light switch.

The bulb shattered in a shower of sparks, plunging the office into absolute, suffocating darkness.

The guard cursed loudly, swinging the metal pipe wildly through the empty air as it crashed against the edge of the wooden desk.

"You little brat!" the guard shouted, stumbling blindly in the dark as he tried to locate her position.

Utilizing the heavy shadows, the waitress slipped past him, her hand gliding along the wall until she found the brass doorknob.

She twisted it open and bolted down the dark hallway, her sneakers pounding frantically against the tiled floor toward the kitchen exit.

Bursting through the back door, she plunged headfirst into the chilly night air of the narrow alleyway, gasping for oxygen.

She didn't stop to look back; she sprinted toward the main street where the glowing lights of the city offered safety in numbers.

As she reached the brightly lit sidewalk, a pair of strong hands suddenly grabbed her shoulders from behind, dragging her into the alcove of a closed bookstore.

She opened her mouth to scream, but a warm, familiar hand gently clamped over her lips to silence her panic.

"Quiet," a calm, deep voice whispered directly into her ear. "If you scream now, we are both dead."

She froze, her eyes widening in the dim light as she recognized the face of the young sous-chef from the bistro, holding a flash drive in his palm.

"I saw what happened in the office," the sous-chef whispered urgently, letting go of her mouth. "And I downloaded everything Victoria is trying to hide."
