Chapter 4 - Digital Isolation

The crimson glow from the smart-home control panel cast an eerie, pulsating light across the modern kitchen, painting long shadows against the polished marble and stainless steel. The mechanical chime continued to pulse at regular intervals, signaling a total override of the estate's internal network. Clara stood frozen near the center island, her mind racing as she calculated her options for escape. The heavy mahogany doors leading to the grand foyer were locked electronically from the main security terminal in Daniel’s study. They were sealed inside a technological fortress of their own design.

Eleanor stepped forward, her expensive tweed jacket rustling as she regained her haughty posture. The momentary panic that had flickered across her face moments earlier had been replaced by a cold, calculated composure.

"You see, Clara?" Eleanor said, her tone dripping with condescension. "You cannot fight a dynasty with empty threats and stolen videos. My family built this city, and we own every system that keeps this house running. You are completely isolated."

Clara turned her gaze from Eleanor to Daniel, who stood silently beside the counter, his hands resting casually in the pockets of his black polo shirt. He looked less like a grieving husband or a panicked conspirator and more like a predator observing a cornered animal.

"You locked down the house," Clara stated flatly, her voice refusing to tremble. "You planned this exact scenario the moment I asked about Sarah's estate lawyer last month."

Daniel tilted his head slightly, a faint, humorless smile touching the corners of his mouth. "You were always too curious for your own good, Clara. I told you that intelligence is a liability when it isn't properly channeled. You had a wonderful life here. Why couldn't you just look away like everyone else?"

"Because an innocent woman was murdered!" Clara shouted, the restraint finally snapping as anger overwhelmed her fear. "And you sat across from me at breakfast every single morning pretending to love me while harboring the exact same ruthlessness that killed your first wife!"

The sharp outburst hung heavily in the air. Eleanor winced slightly at the volume, raising a manicured hand as if to fend off the raw emotion. But Daniel didn't flinch. He simply closed the physical distance between them with unsettling speed, stopping just out of arm's reach.

"Keep your voice down," Daniel warned quietly, his eyes darkening. "If you cooperate, we can handle this quietly. A temporary psychiatric leave, a quiet clinic in upstate New York. You get to live."

Clara looked deep into his eyes and saw absolute void. There was no affection left, only self-preservation. She slowly backed away, her hand brushing against the cold surface of the kitchen counter until her fingers grazed the cracked smartphone still resting near the edge. The screen remained dark, but the battery indicator showed it was still connected to a local Wi-Fi repeater hidden somewhere inside the house.

"I'll never sign those commitment papers," Clara whispered fiercely.

Daniel reached out to grab her wrist, his fingers closing around her arm with brutal strength, but Clara reacted with sudden, desperate speed, slamming her elbow downward into his chest.
