Chapter 3 - The Broken Alibi

The shrill ringing of the kitchen landline echoed off the marble surfaces, amplifying the heavy tension hanging thick in the room. Daniel held the receiver to his ear, his expression hardening with every passing second. He did not speak, merely listening to the voice on the other end of the line before lowering the handset back onto its cradle with deliberate slowness. The silence that followed was suffocating. Clara watched him closely, noting the subtle twitch in his jaw—the only outward sign that his composure was beginning to crack.

"Who was that?" Clara asked, her voice cutting sharply through the quiet kitchen. She kept her distance, acutely aware of Eleanor hovering near the counter like a protective predator.

Daniel looked up, his dark eyes fixing on Clara with a cold, analytical intensity. "That was security at the East Gate," he said evenly. "They just reported that an unfamiliar vehicle attempted to access the private drive. They turned around before reaching the main house, but they left something behind at the security checkpoint."

Eleanor’s head snapped toward her son, her face draining of its remaining color. "What did they leave, Daniel? Was it police?"

"Worse," Daniel replied, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "It was an envelope addressed to Clara, containing the complete forensic brake-line analysis from Sarah’s fatal crash eight years ago. The report that was supposedly destroyed in the courthouse fire."

Clara felt the room spin slightly. The pieces of the horrifying puzzle were falling into place with terrifying speed. Sarah hadn't died in a tragic loss of control on the winding coastal highway. She had discovered something illicit about the Sterling family's corporate holdings, and someone had ensured her car could not stop when she needed it to most. Clara looked down at her own hands, suddenly realizing how fragile her own safety truly was within these walls. If they were willing to silence the first wife to protect their fortune, what were they planning for her now that she had stumbled onto the truth?

"You're planning to frame me, aren't you?" Clara whispered, the realization dawning with sickening clarity. "That’s why the safe in the study was left open. That’s why you pushed me to access the corporate archives last week."

Eleanor let out a sharp, dismissive laugh, though her eyes betrayed genuine panic. "You are being paranoid, Clara. You’ve always been emotionally unstable—everyone at the country club knows how prone you are to dramatic episodes."

Clara ignored Eleanor completely, keeping her focus locked on her husband. "You set me up. Every anniversary, every kind word—it was all part of building a narrative that I was losing my mind, just in case I ever stumbled onto Sarah's file."

Daniel didn't deny it. Instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, sleek flash drive, placing it gently on the counter right next to the cracked smartphone.

"The front gates are locked, Clara," Daniel said softly, stepping closer to block the exit. "And right now, you don't exist outside these walls."

Before Clara could react, the smart-home control panel by the pantry chimed loudly, flashing a red emergency alert across its screen.
