Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Past

Daniel stood frozen in the doorway of the sunlit kitchen, his black polo shirt clinging slightly to his broad shoulders. He possessed short dark hair that was neatly styled, yet his facial expression lacked any trace of natural surprise. Instead, his gaze darted immediately toward the cracked smartphone resting on the marble counter. The glowing screen still displayed the paused video of the older man—a man Clara recognized instantly as Arthur Vance, the family's former chief legal counsel who had mysteriously retired and vanished from public life over eight years ago.
Clara looked from the glowing screen up to her husband, feeling a nauseating wave of realization twist violently in her stomach. The man she had loved, trusted, and built a life with for the past four years was staring at the evidence not with confusion, but with calculated assessment.
"You knew about this," Clara said, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to keep it steady. She pointed a shaking hand toward the phone. "Arthur Vance is talking about Sarah. He’s talking about Daniel's first wife. He’s saying she was murdered."
Eleanor quickly stepped between Daniel and Clara, her aggressive posture returning as she attempted to regain control of the volatile situation. Her tweed jacket rustled sharply as she crossed her arms, projecting an impenetrable wall of aristocratic defense.
"Arthur Vance is a bitter, senile old man who was fired for embezzlement a decade ago," Eleanor snapped, her voice dripping with practiced disdain. "You cannot possibly believe the malicious lies of a criminal over the husband who provides for you, Clara."
Clara refused to back down this time. She stepped to the side, keeping her eyes locked onto Daniel’s unreadable face. The red mark on her cheek throbbed with every beat of her racing pulse, a physical reminder of the lengths to which this family would go to protect their dark secrets.
"Look at me, Daniel," Clara demanded, taking a deliberate step closer to him. "Tell me it's not true. Tell me Arthur is lying."
Daniel remained silent for a long, agonizing moment. His breathing was slow and controlled, the picture of practiced emotional detachment. He glanced sideways at his mother, a silent, unspoken communication passing between them in the heavy air.
"Arthur was paid a very large settlement to keep his imagination quiet," Daniel finally spoke, his voice completely devoid of warmth or remorse. "And you, Clara, were never supposed to find his backup drive in the attic."
Clara stepped back, the horrifying truth settling over her like a heavy shroud. She wasn't just a wife in a wealthy household; she was trapped in a web of calculated criminality.

Without warning, the kitchen landline began to ring shrilly, cutting through the silence. Daniel reached out slowly, lifted the heavy receiver, and listened as a familiar voice whispered a chilling warning.
