Chapter 6 - The Forged Legacy

Clara stepped out of the elevator with the deliberate grace of a queen surveying a conquered province. Her silver hair caught the fluorescent light, gleaming like steel, and her beige blouse was impeccably pressed. She didn't look at Marcus; her cold, venomous gaze locked entirely onto Elena, who was still processing the bombshell Marcus had just dropped.
“Still playing detective in the corridors, Elena?” Clara asked, her voice dripping with condescension as she walked closer, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone floor. “You really thought a single amended trust document and a flash drive would dismantle forty years of Sterling dominance? How delightfully naive.”
Elena forced her expression to harden, burying the shock of Marcus’s revelation deep beneath layers of icy control. She stepped in front of Lily, shielding the little girl from Clara’s toxic aura.
“You’re trespassing in a restricted private archive, Clara,” Elena retorted sharply. “The board suspended your access thirty minutes ago. If you take one more step toward my daughter, I’ll have security escort you off the premises in handcuffs.”
Clara let out a sharp, mocking laugh that echoed down the empty corridor.
“Security? Oh, Elena, sweet, foolish Elena. The guards down in the lobby answer to the Sterling Foundation endowment fund—a fund that Arthur and I still control through three independent shell corporations. You own the empty shell of a house, and you hold a piece of paper signed by a senile old man. But the actual machinery of this empire? It obeys us.”
Marcus stepped forward, casually sliding his hands into his trench coat pockets, his scarred face expressionless.
“That’s fascinating, Mrs. Sterling,” Marcus said smoothly. “Especially since the federal prosecutor’s office just subpoenaed those exact shell corporations ten minutes ago. I suppose the marshals will enjoy discussing endowment funds with you down at the federal courthouse.”
Clara’s smirk faltered for a microsecond, a flicker of genuine panic crossing her features before she regained her composure. She turned her icy glare onto Marcus, narrowing her eyes.
“And who exactly are you? Another one of Elena’s hired mercenaries crawling out of the woodwork?”
“Just an old friend who appreciates a well-documented paper trail,” Marcus replied, offering a tight, humorless smile.
Clara ignored him, turning her attention back to Elena with a triumphant gleam in her eye. She reached into her leather folder and pulled out a faded, yellowed document, waving it slowly in the air like a trophy.
“You think you know who you are, Elena? You think Richard took you in out of the goodness of his heart after your parents allegedly died in that tragic fire? Open your eyes. Richard didn’t rescue an orphan. He hid his own illegitimate child to protect his corporate inheritance from his wife at the time.”
Elena’s breath caught in her throat. The words hit her like a physical blow, aligning horrifyingly with what Marcus had whispered only moments before.
“You’re lying,” Elena whispered, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to remain steady.

“Am I?” Clara smiled wickedly, stepping forward and tossing the faded document onto the floor between them. “Check the birth registry in Burlington, Vermont, darling. You aren't Richard’s daughter-in-law. You’re his biological daughter. Which means Lily... is his legal granddaughter. And according to Sterling family charter section four, illegitimate heirs have zero rights to corporate voting shares.”
