Chapter 5 - The Phantom Witness

Elena whipped around, her reflexes trained from years of navigating corporate warfare and family betrayals. Standing behind her was Marcus Vance, a weathered private investigator with a scarred left jawline and eyes that had seen too many corporate skeletons buried. He lowered his hand slowly, offering a grim, knowing nod toward the spot where Arthur had just been standing.

“You heard him?” Elena asked quietly, keeping her body positioned to shield Lily from view.

“Every single word,” Marcus replied, stepping into the dim light of the hallway. He pulled a slim manila envelope from his trench coat and pressed it into Elena’s palm. “Arthur isn’t just liquidating European assets. He’s liquidating the trust fund Richard set aside for the orphanage downtown. He’s trying to build a war chest to bribe federal investigators before the indictment drops on Monday.”

Lily tugged gently at the hem of Elena’s skirt. “Mommy, I’m tired. Can we go find the special thing in Grandpa’s study now?”

“In just a minute, sweetheart,” Elena murmured, crouching down to adjust the collar of Lily’s school uniform. She looked up at Marcus, her jaw tightening. “My mother in Vermont. Arthur mentioned her. He’s planning to use her as leverage.”

Marcus’s expression darkened significantly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy brass key, setting it carefully on top of the envelope in Elena’s hand.

“I already secured a safe house for your mother three hours ago, Elena. When I saw Arthur’s accountant wire funds to a private security firm in Vermont this morning, I knew what play they were making. Your mother is currently fifty miles away from her cabin, under twenty-four-hour armed guard.”

A massive wave of relief washed over Elena, though the lingering tension in her shoulders remained taut like steel cables. She stood back up, clutching the brass key and the envelope against her chest.

“Thank you, Marcus. If you hadn’t intercepted that wire…”

“Don’t thank me yet,” Marcus interrupted, glancing down the hallway toward the private elevator bank. “Arthur thinks he’s cornered a widow, but he doesn’t realize he’s locked himself in a cage with a predator. However, there’s something else in those documents you haven’t seen yet. Something Richard hid even from me until yesterday.”

Marcus leaned in closer, his voice dropping to barely a whisper.

“Richard didn’t just adopt Lily to protect her from Clara’s cruelty. The DNA test Clara doctored five years ago? It wasn’t a forgery of Lily’s parentage. It was a forgery of your birth certificate, Elena.”

Elena froze, the room seeming to spin slightly on its axis. “What are you talking about? My parents died in a fire when I was three.”

Before Marcus could answer, the elevator bell chimtd loudly down the hall, and the steel doors slid open to reveal Clara Sterling standing inside, holding a thick stack of legal briefs and smiling with terrifying certainty.
