Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Corridor

The heavy glass doors of Sterling Tower hissed shut behind them, sealing off the suffocating atmosphere of the boardroom. Elena led Lily down the quiet, private corridor toward the executive elevators, her heels clicking a steady, rhythmic beat against the polished stone floor. The victory upstairs had been absolute, but Elena knew the Sterling empire didn’t surrender just because a piece of paper commanded it. People like Clara and Arthur survived by adapting, hiding assets in offshore accounts, and deploying lawyers like mercenaries.
“Mommy, are we going home now?” Lily asked softly, her small hand clutching the strap of her blue backpack as she looked up with wide, trusting eyes.
“Almost, sweetie,” Elena said, offering a warm, reassuring smile that softened the hard lines of her face. “We just need to stop by your grandfather’s old study first. There’s something special left behind that belongs entirely to you.”
As they rounded the corner toward the private wing, the sound of muffled voices echoed from the dim hallway near the archives. Elena instantly stopped, holding up a hand to signal Lily to remain silent. She pressed her back against the cool marble pillar, straining her ears to catch the furious whispers ricocheting off the concrete walls. It was Arthur’s voice, sharp and trembling with suppressed rage, speaking on a burner phone.
“I don’t care what it costs, liquidate the European subsidiary immediately!” Arthur hissed into the receiver, pacing back and forth beneath a flickering wall sconce. “If the federal auditors trace those shell companies back to our personal accounts, we are finished. Clara is trying to salvage the estate through the civil courts, but Elena has checkmated us everywhere else.”
A pause hung in the air as Arthur listened to the person on the other end. His posture stiffened, and a dark, malevolent chuckle escaped his throat.
“No, let her have the house for now,” Arthur continued, his voice dropping to a sinister pitch. “Let her celebrate her little victory. Once the board emergency meeting is legally contested on technical grounds next week, we’ll hit her where it hurts the most. Find out where Elena’s mother is staying in Vermont. A little leverage goes a long way when dealing with stubborn widows.”
Elena felt the blood rush from her face. Her mother, Margaret, lived in a quiet cabin nestled deep in the Green Mountains of Vermont—entirely isolated, entirely vulnerable. A cold wave of fury washed over her, instantly replacing the professional composure she had maintained all morning. She took a sharp breath, her fingers curling into tight fists inside the pockets of her navy blue suit. Arthur was planning to drag her family into the crossfire.
Before Elena could step around the pillar and confront him, a heavy hand gripped her shoulder from behind, and a raspy voice whispered directly into her ear.
