Chapter 8 - The Emergency Board Meeting

The executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Vance Tower in downtown Hartford looked out over a sprawling, rain-slicked metropolis that seemed to be dissolving into the gray dawn. Around the massive mahogany table sat the remaining members of the executive committee—Eleanor, her face carved from stone and caked in heavy foundation to hide a sleepless night; Marcus, pacing behind his chair with a cup of black coffee shaking violently in his hand; and Clara, staring blankly at her reflection in the glass of the floor-to-ceiling windows.
The heavy oak doors swung open, and Julian walked in, unfettered by handcuffs. His corporate legal team had successfully secured his release on a two-million-dollar bond three hours prior, arguing successfully before a sleepy federal magistrate that the state’s circumstantial case was riddled with procedural violations.
"Sit down, Julian," Eleanor snapped, not even waiting for him to pull out his chair before she launched her attack. "The stock dropped twelve points in pre-trading before the bell even rang. Reuters is running a breaking banner on the financial wire about a federal investigation into corporate fraud and a shooting at the Old Lyme pier. If we don't issue a controlling statement before the market opens at nine o'clock, the board will initiate a hostile takeover and strip us of every remaining asset we own."
Julian walked slowly to the head of the table, pulled out the central leather chair, and sat down without a word. He didn't look tired; instead, his eyes burned with a terrifying, crystal-clear focus that instantly silenced his siblings. He reached into his briefcase—the same black leather briefcase from the night before—and pulled out the manila envelope Thorne had confiscated, slamming it down onto the wood with a sharp crack.
"Maya Lin survived surgery," Julian said, his voice cutting through the hum of the HVAC system like a scalpel. "She’s currently recovering under heavy guard in a secure wing at Hartford General. And David Vance is currently sitting in a federal holding facility downtown, cooperating fully with the U.S. Attorney’s office."
Marcus stopped pacing, his coffee cup hovering halfway to his mouth. "Cooperating? What do you mean cooperating? If David is talking, we're all going to federal prison for conspiracy and obstruction!"
"Not if we control the narrative first," Julian said, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the table. He looked directly at Eleanor. "Father didn't just hide assets and fake a plane crash, El. The 2012 restructuring wasn't an estate plan. It was a ransom note. Father discovered that one of the people sitting in this very room—someone with executive voting power and direct access to the corporate treasury—was actively siphoning millions into an off-the-books account to finance a private industrial espionage ring that nearly brought down our defense contracts ten years ago."
The room went dead silent. Clara slowly turned away from the window, her face pale, her eyes darting between Julian and Eleanor with genuine terror.
"That's a lie," Marcus snarled, slamming his coffee cup down onto the table, splashing dark liquid across the polished surface. "Julian is trying to save his own skin by throwing one of us under the bus! He’s the executor! He signed off on every illicit wire transfer for the last five years!"
"I signed off on them because Father told me they were classified Department of Defense black-budget expenditures," Julian said, his voice dropping into a chilling, absolute calm. He slowly slid a single sheet of paper from the manila envelope across the table toward Marcus. "But the routing number on this wire transfer from 2015 doesn't lead to a Pentagon shell company, Marcus. It leads to a private Swiss account registered in your wife’s maiden name."
Marcus stared at the paper, his jaw working silently as the blood rushed entirely out of his face, leaving him looking like a corpse under the harsh fluorescent lights of the boardroom.

"You didn't just embezzle four million dollars a decade ago, Marcus," Julian continued, standing up slowly and leaning over the table toward his brother. "You sold our primary avionics patent codes to a foreign competitor in Singapore. Father found out about it three weeks before his stroke. That's why he changed the trust. He didn't leave sixty percent of the company to Maya Lin out of paternal guilt... he left it to her because Maya is a federal investigator working deep undercover for the DOJ’s counter-intelligence division, and Father cut a deal with her to trade his own children's freedom in exchange for keeping the Vance name off the front page of the Wall Street Journal."
