Chapter 14 - The Washington Protocol

The blue light of the wall safe’s digital keypad flickered erratically as Julian took the small, black flash drive from David’s trembling hand. The air in the second-floor library felt heavy, charged with an invisible static that made the hairs on the back of Julian’s neck stand up. Downstairs, the distant crunch of gravel signaled that Eleanor and Clara were still waiting in the car, entirely unaware that the trap they thought they had escaped was snapping shut on a much higher level.

"If I plug this into the safe," Julian said, his eyes fixed on the USB port nestled beneath the glowing keypad, "it routes through the estate's private satellite uplink directly to Washington. Are you telling me this isn't just a local corporate scandal anymore?"

"It never was," Maya said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper as she drew her service weapon and stepped back to cover the open doorway. "Arthur Vance was a ruthless businessman, but he wasn't a traitor to the country. He spent the last ten years using his corporate empire as a shell to finance the covert exposure of a deep-cover mole inside the National Security Division. That’s why the DOJ kept running interference on my investigations. That’s why someone tried to silence me at the pier."

David nodded slowly, leaning his full weight against his cane. "Director Vance wanted Vance Industries liquidated, buried, and forgotten before the federal audit could expose his own signature on the 2011 Singapore weapons transfers. He used Marcus as a pawn, and when Marcus failed to contain the leak, the Director sent a professional cleaner to finish the job."

Julian didn't hesitate anymore. He pushed the black flash drive firmly into the USB port beneath the safe's keypad.

For three agonizing seconds, nothing happened. Then, the blue light on the keypad flashed a violent, blinding red, accompanied by a low, mechanical whirring sound from deep within the brickwork. The heavy steel door of the wall safe clicked open automatically, revealing not money or paper documents, but a single, pristine microcassette recorder resting on a velvet cushion.

At the exact same second, the cell phone in Maya’s tactical vest began to vibrate violently. She pulled it out, her eyes widening as she stared at the encrypted display screen.

"Agent Lin," a cold, synthesized voice crackled through the secure speaker of the phone—a voice that was not Director Vance’s, but an automated operational broadcast. "Priority override protocol activated from Washington headquarters. All regional field units are ordered to terminate surveillance on the Vance estate. Federal custody warrants have been issued for Julian Vance, David Vance, and Agent Maya Lin on charges of high treason and domestic terrorism."

Maya looked up from the screen, her face pale. "They’ve locked us out of the network. Every federal credential we hold has been remotely revoked."

Before Julian could pull the microcassette recorder from the safe, the deep, rumbling roar of multiple heavy diesel engines echoed from the driveway below. Julian sprinted to the bay window and looked down.

Four unmarked black tactical vehicles had torn through the front security gates, their tires spinning gravel as they formed a brutal, unyielding barricade around the cars where Eleanor and Clara were still trapped. Heavily armored tactical operatives in black gear poured out of the vehicles, their automatic rifles raised as they moved swiftly toward the front steps of the estate.

"They're not here to arrest us," Julian said, his voice chillingly calm as he turned to face Maya and David. "They're here to erase us."
