Chapter 2 - The Name in the Dust

Arthur dropped to his knees with a heavy groan, ignoring the ongoing shoving match between his daughters as his trembling fingers brushed against the manila envelope. The paper felt cold against his skin, smelling faintly of mothballs and a past he had spent twenty-five years trying to bury under mortgages, property taxes, and domestic quietude. Martha froze, her hands still raised defensively between Clara and Elena, her blue eyes widening as she recognized the faded ink of the notary seal stamped in the bottom right corner.

"What is that?" Clara demanded, her chest heaving as she tried to shake off her father’s grip. She pointed a shaking finger at the floor. "What did you just hide in that chest, Dad? Is that another deed? Are there papers giving Elena the whole estate?"

"It's not what you think," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking violently. He didn't pick up the envelope; instead, he hovered his hands over it like it might bite him.

Elena lowered her luggage slowly, the sharp hostility in her eyes giving way to deep, creeping dread. She looked past Clara’s shoulder at her father. "Arthur, you’ve been acting paranoid all week about this property division. What’s inside that folder?"

Martha slowly stepped forward, her sensible loafers clicking softly against the hardwood, and knelt beside her husband. Without waiting for his permission, she slipped two fingers under the flap and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment, along with a black-and-white photograph that made the air rush out of her lungs.

"You didn't," Martha gasped, pressing a trembling hand to her mouth.

Clara snatched the photograph out of her mother’s hand before Martha could pull it back. In the picture, a smiling woman with dark blonde hair stood in front of this very house, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a yellow blanket. On the back of the photograph, written in Arthur’s distinct handwriting, was a date from thirty-two years ago—six months before Clara was born.

"Who is this?" Clara’s voice dropped to a terrifying whisper, the anger momentarily replaced by a chilling realization that her entire life was built on a foundation of sand. "Dad... who is the baby?"

Arthur finally looked up, tears cutting tracks through the dust on his cheeks. "She isn't just a baby, Clara. She’s the person who owns fifty percent of every brick, pipe, and square foot of this land."
