Chapter 11 - The Barrel of a Gun

The cold metal barrels of the weapons seemed to suck all the warmth out of the already freezing cabin. Clara let out a sharp, terrified gasp, her hands flying to her mouth as she instinctively backed up against the mahogany drafting table. Elena froze midway between two stacks of old ledgers, her eyes wide with animal panic, her fingers digging into the edge of the wood until her knuckles turned white.

"Keep your hands where we can see them!" the second intruder shouted, stepping past the splintered doorframe and sweeping his weapon in a slow, calculated arc from Arthur to Julian. "Mr. Reed sends his regards. He said you should have stayed in London, Mr. Vance."

Julian didn't raise his hands. Instead, his posture stiffened into a rigid, defensive stance, his eyes darting frantically around the cluttered room, calculating angles, exits, and heavy objects within arm's reach.

"You're too late, boys," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, cutting through the heavy tension like a razor. "The federal magistrate already downloaded the decrypted offshore ledger files from my laptop three minutes before we docked on the island. Even if you put a bullet in every single one of us right now, the audit is already public record. Jonathan’s cartel is finished."

The lead intruder hesitated for a fraction of a second, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger guard. "Shut the fuck up," he spat, taking a menacing step forward. "We aren't here for the audit files. We’re here to make sure the property liens revert back to the primary corporate holder by sunset, permanently."

"You're out of your minds," Arthur yelled, stepping forward to shield Clara with his own frail body, ignoring the warning shouts of the gunman. "Shoot me if you want! Just leave my daughters alone! They didn't have anything to do with Marcus's business!"

"Dad, stop!" Clara screamed, grabbing Arthur’s arm and desperately trying to pull him back, tears finally breaking free and spilling hot down her cheeks. "Don't be an idiot, they'll actually pull the trigger!"

The intruder chuckled, a cold, mechanical sound behind his Kevlar mask. "He's right, old man. You're all collateral damage at this point. Drop the leather journal on the floor, Mr. Vance, or the girl in the maroon cardigan takes the first round."

The muzzle of the gun swung sharply away from Julian and pointed directly at Elena’s chest. Elena let out a strangled, pathetic cry, her knees finally giving out completely as she crumpled to the floor among the dust and scattered papers.

Julian’s eyes locked onto the gunman’s trigger finger. Without a second hesitation, he grabbed the heavy brass-bound ledger from the drafting table and hurled it with maximum force directly into the gunman's face, while simultaneously lunging forward to tackle him to the floor.

As the first shot exploded through the cabin roof with a deafening roar, shattering the glass skylight above, a second, heavier crash echoed from the back window as federal agents in full tactical gear swarmed through the shattered glass, pinning both intruders to the floor in a flurry of shouted commands and snapping zip-ties.
