Chapter 6: Breach at the Gates

Before Agent Vance could lift his head toward the foyer, the sound of heavy tactical boots echoed across the marble hallway.

Marcus flinched, instinctively raising his hands as three armed federal marshals poured into the dining room, their tactical gear contrasting sharply with the opulent, antique decor.

“Federal warrant! Nobody move!” shouted the lead officer, scanning the room with a tactical rifle held at low-ready.

Elena’s composure fractured completely.

The untouchable matriarch of the Sterling empire stumbled backward, her black dress catching on the sharp edge of the broken porcelain plate still resting on the floor.

She grabbed the edge of the mahogany table to keep from falling, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.

“You planned this,” Elena hissed, her eyes darting between Clara and Agent Vance.

“This was an ambush from the very beginning.”

Clara didn't blink.

She scooped Arthur up into her arms, pressing his face into her neck so he wouldn't see the drawn weapons or the flashing red and blue lights reflecting through the high stained-glass windows from outside.

“You spent decades destroying lives to protect a stolen crown, Elena,” Clara said evenly, turning her back on the matriarch.

“I simply opened the door.”

Marcus stepped forward, his face flushed with a mixture of panic and sudden, violent realization.

He grabbed Agent Vance by the sleeve of his gray suit.

“Wait, there’s been a mistake,” Marcus pleaded, his voice cracking desperately.

“I’m an executive vice president. My name is on the corporate charter. I didn't know anything about the offshore accounts!”

Agent Vance gently but firmly shook Marcus off his arm, signaling one of the marshals.

“Mr. Marcus Sterling, your signature appears on the primary transfer authorizations for the past five fiscal quarters,” Vance said flatly, pulling a second document from his briefcase.

“You are also being detained for questioning regarding corporate fraud and money laundering.”

Marcus staggered back as if he had been physically punched in the chest, his eyes widening in horror as two marshals stepped to either side of him, their zip-ties ready.

“No… no, that’s impossible,” Marcus stammered, looking frantically at his wife.

“Clara, tell them! You know I just signed whatever Mother put in front of me!”

Clara paused near the double doors, holding a heavy-breathing Arthur tightly against her beige dress.

She looked back at her husband for a split second, her expression devoid of pity.

“Ignorance isn't innocence, Marcus,” Clara whispered.

“You traded your soul for comfort, and now the bill has arrived.”

Elena let out a harsh, bitter laugh, leaning heavily against the dining table as the marshals moved in to secure her wrists as well.

“You think you’ve won, orphan,” Elena spat, blood dripping from a small cut on her finger where she had grazed the broken porcelain.

“Check the master safe in the basement. You don't own the house yet.”
