Chapter 5: The Federal Audit

The name tag pinned to the man’s lapel caught the amber glow of the chandelier, reading Special Agent Vance, SEC Division of Enforcement.

Elena froze, her hand resting heavily on the mahogany table, her knuckles white.

Marcus pressed his back against the stone fireplace, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly as he looked from the federal agent to his mother.

“Federal auditors?” Marcus finally choked out, his voice a pathetic whisper.

“Mother… what is happening here? What did you do?”

Elena slowly straightened her posture, her eyes narrowing into slits of pure venom directed straight at Clara.

“You invited federal investigators into our family home?” Elena asked, her voice trembling with restrained fury.

“You are destroying your own future, you ungrateful little fraud.”

“My future walked out of that courtroom years ago when your husband forged my adoption papers,” Clara replied coldly, slipping her phone back into her beige dress pocket.

She kept one hand resting protectively on Arthur’s shoulder as the eight-year-old peeked curiously around her skirt, his tears finally drying.

Agent Vance walked further into the formal dining room, ignoring the broken porcelain scattered across the Persian rug, and opened his briefcase.

He pulled out a thick stack of manila folders bearing red classification stamps.

“Mrs. Elena Sterling,” Agent Vance stated formally, addressing the matriarch with dispassionate professionalism.

“You are formally served with a subpoena regarding asset diversion, international tax evasion, and obstruction of justice tied to Sterling Global Logistics.”

Elena didn't flinch, though a muscle in her jaw twitched violently.

She turned her gaze to her son, desperation flickering in her dark eyes.

“Marcus, tell them this is a coup,” Elena commanded, her voice cracking slightly.

“Your wife is committing treason against our family legacy. Stop her!”

Marcus stood frozen in the center of the room, looking like a ghost.

He looked at his mother, then down at Arthur, who shrank away from him, and finally at Clara, whose eyes held no forgiveness left to give.

“Mother,” Marcus whispered, his voice cracking with finality.

“If you forged Clara’s past… then you lied about everything.”

“I built this family!” Elena screamed, the aristocratic mask finally shattering completely as she pointed a trembling finger at Marcus.

“Without me, you’d be nothing!”

Clara stepped forward, her expression impassive as she watched the empire crumble from within.

“The auditors have the server logs, Elena,” Clara said quietly.

“And they also have the financial trail leading directly to your offshore accounts.”

Agent Vance clicked his pen, ready to detail the charges, when a loud, shattering crash echoed from the front foyer.

The heavy front security doors had just been blown off their hydraulic hinges.
