Chapter 11: The Rooftop Helipad

The wind howling across the flat slate roof of the Sterling estate was biting and fierce, carrying the distant scent of burning cedar and chemical smoke up from the lower levels.

Clara pushed open the heavy steel roof access door, stepping out into the blinding glare of the emergency floodlights mounted on the perimeter railing.

Elena Sterling stood near the edge of the helipad, her black dress snapping violently in the gale-force winds, her silver updo completely undone, leaving her long gray hair streaming wildly around her face.

In her right hand, she clutched a ruggedized black military-grade server drive—the exact drive containing every hidden adoption file, financial record, and birth log from Geneva.

“You really don't know when to quit, do you, orphan?” Elena shouted over the roar of the wind, turning around to face Clara with a manic, unhinged grin.

“You could have taken the settlement. You could have walked away with millions and lived a quiet life anywhere on Earth.”

Clara walked slowly toward the center of the helipad, keeping her hands visible, her breathing controlled despite the freezing air burning her lungs.

“You stole my child, Elena,” Clara said, her voice cutting cleanly through the wind.

“You murdered my husband’s father when he threatened to expose the trafficking ring, and you tried to burn me and my son alive in a basement vault.”

Elena threw her head back and laughed—a harsh, jagged sound that was swallowed by the storm.

“Noah was a weak fool, just like his father!” Elena screamed, stepping closer to the sheer drop of the roof edge.

“We bought your identity because the Sterling bloodline required perfection. That twin boy we took to Geneva? He’s currently attending the finest private academy in Zurich, bearing the Sterling name with pride, while you raised the defective spare down here in the dirt!”

Clara stopped dead in her tracks, the revelation hitting her with the force of a physical blow.

Her other son—her twin boy—was alive, somewhere out there in Europe, raised under a false identity by the very woman standing before her.

“Where is he?” Clara demanded, taking another step forward, her eyes burning with a mother’s relentless fury.

“Tell me where my son is, Elena.”

Elena smiled—a cold, victorious expression—as she held the ruggedized server drive out over the open drop of the roof.

“Find him yourself… if you can read the encrypted coordinates on this drive,” Elena taunted.

With a deliberate flick of her wrist, Elena released the server drive, watching it plummet down into the raging flames leaping from the broken windows of the east wing below.

Before Clara could lunge forward to grab her, Elena deliberately stepped backward off the edge of the roof.
