Chapter 4: The Confiscation

The two federal agents moved with practiced, terrifying efficiency. They did not draw their weapons, but their posture and absolute silence communicated an overwhelming authority that rendered Julian entirely powerless. The lead agent, a tall man with iron-gray hair and a trench coat bearing the emblem of the financial crimes division, stepped past the threshold and stopped three feet from the mahogany table.

“Julian Vance?” the agent asked, his voice flat, devoid of any emotional inflection.

Julian opened his mouth, but no sound came out. He merely nodded once, his throat tightening to the point of suffocation.

“You are being placed under arrest for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and international money laundering,” the agent continued, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt loop. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

Clarissa let out a sharp gasp, stumbling backward until her spine hit the heavy sideboard. The glass decanters rattled violently from the impact. “This is a mistake!” she cried out, her voice pitching upward into near hysteria. “I am just a guest here! I have nothing to do with his business accounts! Look at me, I’m an independent consultant!”

The second agent turned his gaze toward Clarissa, his expression hardening. “Ms. Clarissa Miller, correct? We also have a warrant for your financial records. Your personal accounts received over two million dollars in direct wire transfers from the offshore shell company Vance Holdings registered in the Cayman Islands last November. You’re coming with us as well.”

Color drained completely from Clarissa’s face. She looked at Julian as if seeing a ghost, her mouth opening and closing like a fish stranded on dry land. All the haughty arrogance she had worn like armor just moments before vanished, leaving behind only the raw, ugly panic of a grifter caught with her hand in the vault.

“Julian, you said those funds were clean,” Clarissa whispered, her voice cracking with betrayal. “You swore to me the shell company was legitimate venture capital.”

“Shut up,” Julian muttered through clenched teeth, refusing to look at her. His eyes remained fixed on Evelyn, who stood near the head of the table, watching the unfolding wreckage with the cold serenity of a judge presiding over an execution.

“You planned this,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a hoarse, venomous rasp as the first agent stepped forward and snapped the handcuffs onto his wrists with a sharp, metallic click. “Every single piece of it. You let me dig the hole. You signed off on the initial transfers just to build the paper trail. This wasn't an audit, Evelyn. It was a trap.”

Evelyn took a slow step forward, the light of the crystal chandelier catching the facets of the diamond ring on her finger.

“A trap requires bait, Julian,” Evelyn replied softly. “I simply gave you enough rope to hang yourself, and you were more than happy to climb the ladder.”

The agents grabbed Julian by both arms, steering him firmly toward the double doors. Clarissa was fitted with heavy zip-ties behind her back, sobbing quietly as she was hauled out behind him.

As they passed through the doorway, Julian managed to turn his head back for a final, hateful glance. “You won’t keep the company,” he snarled. “The board will tear you apart without me.”

Evelyn watched them disappear into the foyer, then turned to face the empty hallway. “The board was yours, Julian. Mine is walking through the front door right now.”
