Chapter 1: The Gathering Storm

The polished mahogany dining table reflected the cold, unforgiving glare of the crystal chandelier above. Julian Vance stood at the head of the table, his navy blue suit fitting him with tailored precision, though it could not hide the thin sheen of nervous sweat breaking out across his forehead. He leaned forward, bracing his hands against the wood, and looked down at his wife.

Evelyn sat motionless in her black turtleneck dress, her dark hair swept up into an immaculate, severe twist. Pearl earrings caught the light, gleaming like frozen tears against her lobes. Behind her, Clarissa stood in a shimmering silver gown, her posture rigid, her expression a mask of manufactured superiority.

“Evelyn, don't make a scene,” Julian said, his voice dropping an octave in a desperate bid for authority. He glanced around the empty, cavernous dining room as if fearing invisible witnesses.

Evelyn did not flinch. She turned her head sharply, locking her cold, intense gaze directly onto Julian. The silence stretched, thick and suffocating.

Clarissa stepped closer, her tone dripping with condescension. “Learn your place.”

Evelyn stood up abruptly, the scraping sound of her chair echoing sharply against the floorboards. She glared up at Julian, who instinctively stood to face her, towering over her by half a foot, though his posture remained defensive.

“Are you insane?” Julian hissed, his eyes darting toward the documents spread before them.

Evelyn kept her eyes fixed on his, her voice dropping to a register that sent a shiver down his spine. “You should ask who owns this room.”

With deliberate, agonizing slowness, Evelyn reached for a heavy platinum diamond ring resting atop the neatly organized stacks of financial papers. She released it, letting the ring drop with a sharp clatter onto the center of the financial reports.

“I approved every dollar,” Evelyn said, her voice steady and lethal. “Charts, failed deals, and hidden accounts. Funding ends tonight.”

Julian stared at the ring, his face draining of all color as the terrifying realization of his ruin settled over him.

Clarissa gasped, stepping forward to snatch the papers, only to freeze when Julian’s phone buzzed violently on the table.
