Chapter 4: The Strategic Retreat

Elena uses the distraction of Nathan’s impassioned plea to slide her right foot backward, feeling blindly behind her for the heavy wooden leg of the kitchen table. Her fingers graze the cold metal handle of a forgotten utility drawer just out of sight beneath the counter. If she can reach the heavy cast-iron skillet resting on the back burner, or even the ceramic bowl filled with fruit, she might buy them the three seconds needed to scramble toward the terrace doors. But Clara’s peripheral vision is razor-sharp. With a sudden, whip-like motion, the blonde woman snaps the hockey stick downward, the wooden blade slamming into the floor tiles a mere inch from Elena’s outstretched fingertips, sending a sharp crack echoing through the room.
“Don’t even think about it,” Clara warns, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “One twitch, and I break her collarbone. Then yours. In that exact order.”
Mia screams—a sharp, high-pitched cry of pure terror that pierces the tense atmosphere. The sound breaks whatever remaining hesitation was holding Nathan in check. Disregarding his own safety, Nathan lunges forward, abandoning all caution. He dives across the gleaming kitchen floor, his grey suit sliding on the smooth surface as he launches himself directly at Clara’s legs.
The unexpected tackle catches Clara off guard. The hockey stick flies from her grip, clattering loudly against the marble countertop before skidding across the floor toward the sink. Clara stumbles backward, her beige heels catching on the edge of the woven kitchen rug, and she goes down hard, her white linen dress riding up as she hits the tile with a sharp gasp of indignation.
“Nathan! You idiot!” Clara shrieks, losing her composure for the first time as she scrambles to regain her footing.
Nathan is already on his feet, not looking back at his enraged wife. He scoops up little Mia in one strong arm, pulling the crying child against his chest, while using his free hand to haul Elena up by her good arm.
“Move! Run!” Nathan orders, his voice commanding and breathless.

Elena doesn't hesitate. Adrenaline floods her veins, masking the pain of her bruised ribs and battered limbs. Clinging to Nathan’s side, she helps guide him toward the sprawling glass sliding doors that lead out to the rear patio and the expansive estate gardens beyond. The cool autumn air rushes into the warm, sterile kitchen as the glass panel glides open with a heavy, mechanical hum.
Behind them, Clara rights herself with terrifying speed, her face contorted into a mask of pure fury as she dives toward the utensil block on the island.
