Chapter 13: The Precinct

The downtown central police precinct is a bustling labyrinth of fluorescent lighting, ringing telephones, and the low, constant murmur of city life moving at an unforgiving pace. The air smells of cheap coffee, old paper, and nervous sweat. In a quiet, sterile interview room near the back of the precinct, Elena sits in a hard plastic chair, holding little Mia tightly in her lap. The child has finally stopped crying, her small head resting quietly against Elena’s shoulder, her breathing slow and even as exhaustion claims her.

The heavy metal door swings open, and Detective Miller steps into the room, followed closely by a female social worker carrying a clipboard and a warm blanket.

“Ms. Elena?” Detective Miller asks gently, his authoritative demeanor softening noticeably when he looks at the bruised child. “How are you holding up?”

Elena looks up, her face still bearing the purple contusions from the morning’s violence, but her dark eyes are clear and steady.

“We’re alright, Detective. Mia is resting,” Elena replies, her voice smooth and composed. “Did... did Nathan make it? Is he here?”

“Mr. Vance is currently being processed in booking, along with Mrs. Vance,” Miller explains, pulling up a chair opposite them. “He submitted a full digital confession regarding both the physical assault in the kitchen and years of corporate financial violations. He’s cooperating fully with the district attorney’s office.”

Elena lets out a long, shuddering breath, the last remnants of her physical tension melting away. She had prepared herself for a protracted legal battle, for payoffs, for powerful lawyers burying the truth in endless bureaucratic paperwork. She had never expected accountability.

“He didn't run,” Elena murmurs, almost to herself.

“No, ma'am, he didn't,” Miller confirms with a slight nod. “Child Protective Services has a liaison waiting outside to ensure Mia receives a full medical evaluation for her bruises and scratches, but I can assure you, given the evidence Mr. Vance provided and your testimony, the custody arrangements will be handled with absolute protection for you and your daughter.”

The social worker steps forward, offering a gentle, reassuring smile as she drapes the warm blanket over Mia’s small shoulders.

“Whenever you’re ready, Ms. Elena, we have a quiet family consultation room prepared where you can rest, wash up, and speak with a legal advocate who will ensure your rights and Mia’s future are fully protected under the law,” the social worker says softly.

Elena looks down at her sleeping daughter, brushing a stray lock of hair from the child’s forehead. The storm has finally broken, leaving behind the difficult, necessary work of rebuilding from the foundation up.
