Chapter 2: Splintered Glass

The single syllable hangs in the sunlit air, heavy with the weight of years of calculated deception. Nathan takes an involuntary half-step forward, his polished leather shoe scraping sharply against the hardwood transition strip before meeting the cold kitchen tile. Clara does not flinch. Instead, the wooden blade of the hockey stick remains poised, hovering inches above Mia’s trembling shoulder. Clara’s eyes flick toward her husband, her gaze devoid of the warmth that once characterized their decade-long marriage. She recognizes the profound shock paralyzing him, and she uses that paralysis to her advantage.
“Don’t listen to her, Nathan,” Clara says, her voice eerily calm, defying the violent posture of her body. “The woman is unhinged. She fell down the basement stairs this morning while carrying the child. I merely stepped in to keep them contained until emergency services could be reached.”
Elena pulls little Mia tighter against her chest, wincing as the pressure aggravates the deep bruising along her ribs. Tears stream freely down Elena’s cheeks, mixing with the dust on her face.
“He’s lying to you, Nathan! Look at her! Look at my face! She didn't find us; she hunted us down the moment you left for the downtown office. She found the DNA paperwork in your study safe. She knows Mia is yours!”
Nathan looks between his wife and the maid, his chest rising and falling in shallow, rapid breaths. The grey suit jacket suddenly feels restrictive, choking him as a cold sweat breaks out across his forehead. He remembers the safe combination—only he and Clara knew it. He remembers the confidential paternity test he had commissioned three weeks ago, paranoid that whispers among the household staff might compromise his corporate standing. He had locked the documents away, believing them safe from prying eyes.
“Clara,” Nathan begins, his voice cracking slightly, betraying a deep, underlying panic. “Lower the stick. Now. Put it down.”
Clara tilts her head, a chilling smile touching the corners of her painted lips. The beige heels click against the floor as she shifts her weight, maintaining absolute dominance over the space.

“You always were entirely too trusting of the help, darling,” Clara murmurs, her eyes locking onto his. “You build a life, you accumulate wealth, you maintain an immaculate image in society, and then someone from the lower floor thinks they can stake a claim on your legacy. I simply refuse to let an illicit affair ruin everything we’ve built.”
Nathan’s hands clench into fists at his sides. The illusion of his perfect suburban existence has evaporated, leaving behind a jagged landscape of infidelity, class disparity, and sudden, lethal menace. He realizes that Clara isn't just angry; she is methodical, cornered, and entirely capable of carrying out her threat.
