THE HOUSE OF SILENT DEBT / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7

Julian left the hidden alcove with Leo riding on his shoulders, the boy’s small hands gripping his short dark hair with familiar comfort. Maren walked beside them through the service corridor, her steps measured and quiet, refusing to return to the grand master suite just yet. When they emerged into the main upstairs hallway, Clara was waiting for them. She stood near the top of the grand staircase, her dark blue off-the-shoulder dress catching the light, her white hair framing a face carved from absolute authority. She did not look at Maren; her piercing gaze was locked entirely on Julian.

"You have a habit of breaking locks that were never meant to be forced, Julian," Clara said, her voice carrying easily across the open space of the landing.

"This house is not a prison, Clara, no matter how hard you try to run it like one," Julian retorted, setting Leo down gently on the floor and nudging the boy toward his mother. Maren took Leo’s hand, leading him quietly down the corridor toward the nursery, leaving the two adults alone on the landing.

Clara stepped forward, her posture rigid and unyielding. "It is a fortress, Julian. And right now, it is the only thing standing between your recklessness and the total destruction of this family."

"My recklessness?" Julian laughed bitterly, stepping close enough to catch the scent of expensive lavender water that always accompanied his mother-in-law. "Your obsession with control is what drove Maren into hiding in the first place. You treat everyone around you like pawns on a chessboard."

"Someone has to be the adult in this family," Clara replied sharply, her micro-expressions tightening only slightly to reveal the deep strain beneath her composed exterior. "You think you can waltz in here with your tailored suits and your empty promises, sweeping away the hard realities of maintaining a generational estate. But the bills come due, Julian. They always come due."

Julian stared at her, the realization dawning that Clara knew far more about his financial ruin than she had ever let on. "You bought my corporate debt, didn't you? You and your associates."

Clara did not blink. She held his intense, confrontational gaze without hesitation. "Someone had to protect Maren's inheritance from being liquidated to pay off your bad gambles. This house stays in the family, Julian, whether you are part of it or not."
