Chapter 5

Maya led Julian down a narrow, wood-paneled hallway behind the pantry that he had never noticed before, despite living in the house for years. The air here smelled faintly of dust and old cedar, contrasting sharply with the bright, modern finishes of the main living areas. She stopped in front of a tall, built-in linen cabinet that blended seamlessly into the dark wood paneling of the wall. With a practiced motion, she pressed the lower right corner of the molding; a hidden latch clicked open with a soft, satisfying snap. The heavy wooden door swung inward, revealing a pitch-black cavity that sloped slightly upward into the dark.
"This is it," Maya said, stepping back and folding her arms across her beige dress. "I am not going any further. This is between you, Maren, and my mother."
Julian did not hesitate. He stepped over the threshold into the narrow corridor, the darkness immediately swallowing his silhouette. The floor beneath his shoes was covered in a thick layer of dust, undisturbed for months, which confirmed that Clara rarely ventured into this forgotten space. He felt along the rough plaster wall for guidance, his fingers brushing against exposed brick and old wiring. After walking a few yards, he noticed a faint sliver of yellow light cutting across the floor ahead of him. He quickened his pace, his heart hammering against his ribs as the passage opened up into a small, dimly lit alcove behind a massive mahogany wardrobe. He pressed his ear against the back panel of the furniture; he could hear the faint, steady sound of a child’s breathing mixed with the low murmur of an adult voice.

"Maren?" Julian whispered, pressing his hands against the wooden backing of the wardrobe and pushing with all his might.
The heavy piece of furniture slid forward on hidden casters, grinding quietly against the hardwood floor. A flood of warm, golden light spilled over him, temporarily blinding him in the dim space. As his eyes adjusted, he saw Maren sitting on a low velvet settee, her face pale and drawn, wearing a simple silk robe that looked far too large for her thin frame. Kneeling on the rug beside her was Leo, looking up at his mother with wide, trusting eyes while clutching a worn wooden toy truck. Maren turned her head slowly toward the opening, her blue eyes devoid of surprise, carrying only an immense, crushing fatigue.
