Chapter 9: Trapped Within

Inside the study, the air felt increasingly thin as the ventilation system remained stubbornly dormant. David gripped the brass handle again, throwing his weight against the heavy oak paneling, but the door was reinforced with a steel core—standard security measures installed by the previous owner, which David had never paid much attention to until now.

"Try the manual override switch by the baseboard!" David shouted through the wood, his voice echoing in the confined space.

"I'm trying!" Elena yelled back, her composure finally cracking under the weight of panic. The sound of frantic scraping against the drywall outside indicated she was desperately searching for the hidden control panel behind the bookshelf. "It's stuck! The panel is fused shut!"

David backed away from the door, his eyes scanning the study. The smart-home display panel mounted on the wall—a sleek glass tablet embedded in the plaster—was glowing with a soft, pulsing blue light. Across the screen, lines of text were scrolling rapidly, written in a programming language David didn't recognize. It wasn't an external hack; it was the legacy firmware operating on a closed loop, executing a routine that had been dormant for half a decade.

RE_INITIATE_PROTOCOL_V4. CLEAR_THE_PATH. PREPARE_FOR_ARRIVAL.

The words flashed rhythmically across the screen. David approached the panel, reaching out to touch the glass, but as his finger drew near, the screen flickered violently, displaying a low-resolution security camera feed from the foyer.

On the screen, the camera view showed the front glass doors. Standing there on the tiled floor was Lily, wearing her light blue t-shirt and oversized blue cleaning gloves. But she wasn't alone. Standing just behind her, half-obscured by the glare of the afternoon sun through the glass, was the tall, slender figure of a woman in a thick beige robe. The figure's hand rested gently on Lily’s shoulder, guiding her toward the center of the room.

"Lily..." David breathed, horrified as he watched the live feed. He slammed his fist against the smart panel, but the glass was unbreakable.

Suddenly, the intercom speaker embedded in the ceiling above his desk crackled to life. It didn't emit a voice, but rather the faint, rhythmic sound of a young girl's breathing, followed by a soft, whispering sigh that sounded heartbreakingly close to his ear.

“Mommy is coming,” a voice whispered through the static—not Lily’s voice, and not Elena’s, but a third voice, clear and cold, echoing from a tragedy long past.
