Chapter 2: Shadows in the Foyer

The quiet lingered for several agonizing seconds after Lily’s soft, misplaced word dissolved into the sterile air of the foyer. David remained on his knees, his posture stiffening as the weight of the child's mistake settled over him. He did not correct her immediately. His eyes flicked back toward the background, where Elena, wrapped tightly in her beige robe, stood paralyzed near the threshold. Her hair was pulled back in a loose, untidy knot, and her face bore the unmistakable exhaustion of someone who had been sleeping fitfully through the middle of the day.

Elena stepped forward, her bare feet making almost no sound on the hardwood floor before she reached the cold tiles of the entryway. "Lily," Elena said gently, her voice carrying a dry, raspy timbre that hinted at hours of silence. "Come away from the floor. You'll catch a chill."

Lily did not move right away. Her gaze remained fixed on David, her dark eyes searching his face as if trying to assemble a puzzle from pieces that did not quite fit. The oversized blue cleaning gloves rustled softly as she finally lowered her hands, resting them limply against her knees. The stark contrast between the bright, cheerful color of the rubber and the bleakness of the room's mood was striking. David slowly stood up, brushing an invisible speck of dust from his dark trousers, his movements calculated and restrained.

"She was only waiting," David said quietly, his voice deep and measured, addressing Elena more than the child. He avoided looking directly at his wife, his attention drifting back to the glass doors that remained slightly ajar, letting in a thin ribbon of autumn wind. "The house was too quiet when I came in."

"The house is always quiet lately," Elena replied, her tone flat, devoid of accusation yet heavy with a weariness that went far beyond physical fatigue. She walked over and extended a hand to Lily. The girl took it slowly, slipping off the oversized blue gloves and letting them drop onto the tile with a dull thud. As Elena pulled Lily to her feet, she cast a lingering look at David. There was an unspoken conversation passing between the adults—a shared recognition of a reality they were both desperately trying to manage, yet failing to control. The incident in the foyer was not merely a child's momentary confusion; it was a symptom of a much deeper fracture within the household.
