Chapter 11: Breaking the Loop

David and Elena stopped at the edge of the foyer, paralyzed by the sheer surrealism of the scene. The woman in the beige robe turned her head slowly, her eyes meeting David’s. There was no malice in her gaze, only an infinite, crushing sorrow—a mother’s grief frozen in time, waiting for an ending that had never been properly written.
"Lily," Elena called out, her voice cracking with emotion as she took a tentative step forward. "Lily, drop the cloth. Come back to us."
Lily paused, her blue-gloved hands resting on the cold tile. She looked up at the woman in the beige robe, then turned her head to look at Elena. The child's face was completely calm, illuminated by the pale light filtering through the glass doors.
"She just wants the floor to be clean," Lily said softly, her voice echoing in the vast space. "She said nobody helped her clean up the mess before the doors locked."
The woman in the beige robe raised a hand, gesturing slowly toward the heavy glass doors behind her. The smart-home control panel on the wall began to beep rhythmically, a high-pitched alarm that signaled the impending activation of the security lockdown. If the protocol completed its cycle, the glass doors would seal shut permanently, trapping them inside the memory loop just as Clara and her mother had been trapped years before.
"We have to break the circuit," David realized aloud. He looked around the foyer, spotting the main electrical breaker box mounted in a recessed niche behind the decorative molding. It was locked behind a heavy glass cover, protected by the same automated system.
"Elena, give me something heavy," David demanded, his eyes darting around the room.

Without hesitation, Elena grabbed a heavy brass candleholder from the console table and thrust it into his hands. David didn't hesitate. He rushed toward the breaker box and smashed the brass heavy against the glass cover. It shattered with a deafening crash, showering the tiles in glittering shards.
Without wasting a second, David reached inside and threw the master circuit breaker downward with all his might.
