Chapter 9: The Uninvited Guest

The progress bar on the computer screen hit one hundred percent with a soft chime, but Julian barely registered it as adrenaline surged through his veins. He snatched the flash drive from the USB port, shoved it deep into his trouser pocket, and killed the computer power switch with a slap of his palm. The study plunged back into darkness as footsteps echoed softly from the hardwood floor of the main hallway. Someone had bypassed the perimeter or picked the front lock with professional efficiency. Julian slipped out from behind the desk, his movements instinctual and silent, drawing back into the deep shadows cast by the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. The door to the study creaked open slowly, a narrow sliver of hallway light cutting across the Persian rug. A tall figure stepped into the room, silhouetted against the ambient light from the foyer—a man wearing a dark trench coat and a wide-brimmed hat pulled low over his face. The intruder moved with quiet confidence, scanning the room with a small tactical flashlight whose beam cut sharply through the dust motes dancing in the air. Julian pressed his back flat against the wall between two towering shelves, holding his breath as the beam of light swept dangerously close to his position. The intruder paused near the desk, noticing immediately that the computer chair was slightly askew and the screen had been forcefully powered down. A low, gravelly curse escaped the man’s lips as he realized someone had been accessing the files just moments before his arrival. He reached inside his trench coat, the dull metallic glint of a silenced firearm catching the faint light. Panic threatened to override Julian’s discipline, but he knew that if the intruder found Lily sleeping in the living room, the situation would escalate beyond redemption. He needed to draw the threat away from the front of the house, creating a distraction that would buy him enough time to reach his daughter and escape out the back. Spotting a heavy glass paperweight resting on a nearby accent table, Julian swept it off the surface and hurled it hard toward the opposite corner of the room. The paperweight smashed into a decorative vase with a deafening crash of shattering glass and porcelain. The intruder spun around instantly, sweeping his flashlight and firearm toward the noise, bellowing a harsh command and firing a muffled shot that buried itself deep into the drywall. Seizing the opening, Julian bolted from the shadows, slipping past the startled intruder and racing out into the dark hallway toward the living room.
