Chapter 10: Flight into the Night

The muffled gunshot echoed through the quiet halls like a heavy book slamming onto a wooden table, shattering the fragile peace of the house. Julian sprinted down the hallway, his heart hammering violently against his ribs as fear for Lily’s safety drove every movement. He burst into the living room, expecting to find chaos, but found Lily still curled up on the velvet sofa, startled awake by the noise but momentarily frozen in confusion. “Daddy? What was that loud bang?” she asked, her voice trembling as she sat up, rubbing her sleepy eyes. Julian didn’t waste a single second answering with words; he scooped her up into his arms in one fluid motion, holding her tightly against his chest while grabbing his heavy wool coat from the back of the chair. “We need to go right now, sweetie. Hold on to me tight,” he whispered fiercely, his voice a blend of absolute urgency and calming resolve. Footsteps thudded heavily down the hallway behind them as the intruder realized he had been tricked by the broken vase. Julian didn’t look back; he bolted toward the rear kitchen exit that led out to the overgrown backyard and the safety of the wooded ravine beyond the property line. He kicked the back door open, the chilly night air rushing in to greet them as they plunged headfirst into the darkness of the yard. Behind them, the back door of the study banged open, and a harsh voice shouted curses into the night air, followed by the terrifying sound of another silenced shot clipping the wooden doorframe inches from Julian’s head. He ducked low, using his body as a shield for Lily as he scrambled over the low stone retaining wall at the edge of the lawn. They tumbled down the grassy embankment into the dense thicket of trees that lined the ravine, the uneven terrain biting into Julian’s knees and hands. He ignored the sharp pain, pushing forward through the underbrush until they were safely hidden beneath the sprawling canopy of an ancient oak tree. Holding Lily close to quiet her breathing, Julian strained his ears to listen for pursuit. The crunch of footsteps on gravel faded in the distance as the intruder realized searching the dark woods without night-vision gear was a fool's errand. They were temporarily safe, but they were stranded in the cold night with no car, no shelter, and a dangerous criminal network hunting them down.
