Chapter 7: The Locked Study

Clara’s private study was located at the far end of the ground floor hallway, a room Julian rarely entered during their marriage, respecting the boundary she had established for her freelance consulting work. The heavy mahogany door was shut tight, and as Julian tested the brass knob, he found it firmly locked. Frustration flared in his chest, but he refused to let it derail his focus. He remembered seeing a spare set of keys hanging inside the pantry cabinet during a minor kitchen renovation the previous year. Moving with practiced urgency, he jogged quietly down the hallway to the kitchen, rifled through the cluttered utility drawer until his fingers brushed cold metal, and retrieved the small brass ring holding half a dozen keys. Within minutes, he was back at the study door, trying the keys one by one until the third one slid smoothly into the antique lock and turned with a satisfying click. He pushed the heavy door open, stepping into a room that smelled faintly of old paper, jasmine tea, and expensive printer ink. The curtains were drawn shut, plunging the space into near-total darkness, save for the pale moonlight cutting through the blinds. Julian reached out and flicked the wall switch, illuminating a neat desk centered beneath a large bookshelf filled with legal and financial binders. He moved directly to the computer workstation sitting on the mahogany surface, pressing the power button with an anxious finger. The tower hummed to life, the blue LED light casting an eerie glow across the room. A password login screen immediately appeared, demanding a complex passphrase that Julian had no hope of guessing on the first try. He stared at the blinking cursor, feeling the crushing weight of his digital ignorance. Clara had built an impenetrable wall around her professional life, and now that very wall was keeping him from finding the evidence needed to save her. Desperate, he scanned the desk for sticky notes, planners, or any handwritten clues that might point toward the password. His eyes landed on a heavy crystal paperweight resting on top of a leather-bound journal. Lifting the paperweight revealed a small photograph of Lily taped directly to the wood beneath it. Julian carefully peeled back the corner of the photograph, discovering a sequence of alphanumeric characters written in tiny, precise print—a digital key left behind by a woman who always planned for the worst-case scenario.
