Chapter 7

Evelyn didn't raise her voice. The silence between them was heavier than any shout could ever be. She lowered the brass candlestick slightly, her gaze drifting from Clara to the open wooden chest filled with Sarah’s unopened gifts, and finally to the journal resting on the center table. A profound weariness seemed to settle over the older woman’s shoulders, washing away some of her rigid posture, though her eyes remained sharp and guarded.

"You shouldn't have opened that door, Clara," Evelyn said softly, her voice carrying a haunting echo of old regrets. "Some rooms are locked for a reason. Not to punish the living, but to keep the dead from escaping."

"The dead are already here, Evelyn," Clara replied, her voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through her veins. She stepped out from the shadows, facing her mother-in-law directly. "You’ve turned this house into a tomb for thirty years. You punished Mark for surviving a fire he was too young to prevent, and tonight you punished Lily just because she wanted to blow out her candles."

Evelyn flinched, the first crack of genuine emotion appearing on her granite face. "You don't know what it’s like to watch your child burn," Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking for the first time. "Sarah wanted a celebration. She wanted candles. And because I turned my back for one second to answer the phone, the world ended. Every time I see a child reach for a cake, I see the flames. Smashing that cake tonight wasn't cruelty, Clara. It was a mercy. It stopped the fire before it could start."

"No," Clara said, stepping closer, closing the distance between them. "That’s not mercy. That’s a prison. You’re punishing Lily for a tragedy she had nothing to do with. You’re making her pay for your guilt. If Sarah could see what you’ve done to her brother and her niece in her name, she would be heartbroken."

Evelyn stared at Clara, her lower lip trembling slightly before she clamped her jaw shut, fighting to regain her composure. "You think you’re strong, Clara. You think love and laughter can conquer everything. But joy is fragile. The moment you drop your guard, life takes everything away from you."

May you like

"Maybe it does," Clara conceded, her voice softening with a sudden, profound empathy. "But living in fear of the end means you never actually begin. I refuse to let Lily grow up in the ashes of a fire that happened before she was born. We are leaving, Evelyn. Tomorrow morning, Mark, Lily, and I are packing our bags. You can stay here in your museum of ghosts, or you can choose to finally put the matches down."

Evelyn stood in the doorway for a long, agonizing moment, the weight of decades pressing down on her narrow shoulders. She didn't threaten. She didn't shout. She simply turned around without another word, her slippers shuffling softly against the hallway carpet as she walked back toward her bedroom, leaving the door to the past wide open.
