Chapter 14

The spring thaw came quickly to Oakhaven, washing away the winter snow and replacing it with vibrant green shoots, blossoming cherry trees, and the warm, salt-kissed breeze of the coast. Life in the craftsman cottage settled into a rhythm of profound peace and steady joy. The estate Evelyn had left behind was legally transferred to Mark, but they chose not to sell it immediately. Instead, they hired a crew to clear out the oppressive colonial house, turning the dark archives into a bright community art space for local children—a place where laughter, paint, and celebration were not only allowed, but encouraged.

On a warm Saturday afternoon in late May, exactly one year after the day Lily’s birthday cake had been smashed on the floorboards, a new cake sat in the center of their kitchen table in Oakhaven. It was a two-layer vanilla cake covered in bright pink frosting and decorated with ten glowing wax candles—a do-over for the milestone celebration they had been denied.

Lily, now eleven years old, stood by the table wearing a bright yellow sundress, her long blonde hair flowing freely without a headband. Clara stood nearby with her red hair catching the sunlight through the kitchen window, her hazel eyes shining with unshed tears of pure happiness. Mark stood beside his daughter, holding a box of matches, smiling from ear to ear.

"Are you ready, birthday girl?" Mark asked gently, striking a match against the box with a steady, confident hand.

"Ready," Lily said, her face illuminated by the warm, flickering glow of the ten candles.

She didn't hesitate. She leaned forward, closed her eyes tightly, made a silent wish filled with all the bright possibilities of her future, and blew out every single candle in one long, triumphant breath. A puff of white smoke drifted upward toward the ceiling, scented with sweet vanilla and melted wax.

No one screamed. No one shouted. No one rushed forward to smash the cake. Instead, Clara laughed, clapping her hands together, and Mark pulled his daughter into a warm, protective embrace that held no fear, only boundless love.
