Chapter 4: Whispers from the Vent

The metal grate buckled inward under the force of Elena’s blow, sending a cloud of dark, ancient dust billowing across the polished hardwood floor. Clara coughed, shielding her swollen belly with one arm while desperately trying to soothe a sobbing Lily, who refused to let go of her white stuffed rabbit.
Elena stared into the dark, yawning blackness of the heating duct, her breath catching in her throat. The voice had been unmistakable. It was Julian’s voice—smooth, calculating, and dripping with an malice that defied the fact that he was supposed to be thousands of miles away.
“You missed a spot, my dear wife,” the voice echoed faintly from deep within the metallic labyrinth of the house.
Elena tightened her grip on the brass poker, her teeth gritted so hard her jaw ached. She refused to succumb to terror in front of Eleanor, who stood watching the scene with an unnerving, serene composure.
“Show yourself, you coward!” Elena shouted down the dark shaft, her voice rebounding off the tin walls in a harsh, distorted screech.
Eleanor stepped forward, her silver bracelet chiming softly in the tense quiet.
“He won’t show himself through a vent, Elena,” Eleanor said, her tone dripping with quiet disdain. “Julian was never one to crawl when he could orchestrate a tragedy from the shadows.”
Clara clutched her side, a sharp pain shooting across her lower abdomen as the anxiety reached a boiling point.
“My water just broke,” Clara gasped, her face draining of all color as she leaned heavily against the mahogany wall for support. “Elena, please... we need an ambulance. Now.”
Elena snapped her head toward Clara, the corporate pragmatist instantly warring with the desperate human being. The audit was tomorrow. If Clara went to the hospital, paramedics would ask questions. Police reports would be filed. The house would be searched.
“Hold it in,” Elena ordered instinctively, her voice harsh and desperate. “You can’t go to the hospital tonight. The delivery team isn’t scheduled until next week, and the financial transfer hasn’t cleared!”
Eleanor let out a sharp gasp of disbelief, stepping between Elena and the pregnant woman.
“Have you lost your absolute mind?” Eleanor yelled, her usual restrained composure finally cracking. “She is in active labor, you narcissistic monster!”
Elena raised the brass poker slightly, her eyes blazing with a wild, cornered desperation.

“No one leaves this house until I know what Julian is planning!” Elena screamed.
Before Eleanor could lunge forward to help Clara, the heavy oak front door slowly creaked open on its own, revealing a solitary figure standing in the threshold.
