Chapter 14: The Final Bargain

Julian stared down at the small black flash drive resting in his palm, the smug triumph vanishing completely from his face. The fluorescent light overhead seemed to hum louder, magnifying the absolute stillness of the interrogation room as the seconds ticked away like falling grains of sand.

“You’re bluffing,” Julian said, though his voice lacked its previous confident edge. “If the federal investigators open that trust, they’ll trace the original asset laundering back to my mother—and to you.”

Elena leaned forward, the handcuffs clinking softly against the metal table as she locked her dark eyes onto his.

“I have nothing left to lose, Julian,” Elena replied softly, her voice steady and chillingly calm. “I’ve already lost the house, the company, and my freedom. But you? You spent two years plotting your grand resurrection just to inherit a pile of ashes and a federal tax audit.”

Julian gripped the flash drive tighter, his knuckles turning white as he calculated the catastrophic fallout of the automated protocol Elena had just described. If the federal authorities audited the Blackwood trust, every hidden asset, every forged signature, and every smuggled cent would be exposed, leaving him penniless and legally implicated in his father’s disappearance alongside his mother.

“You’re insane,” Julian whispered, stepping back from the table as if realizing he was standing too close to a detonating explosive.

“I’m a survivor,” Elena corrected fiercely. “Now, here are my terms. You drop the homicide accusation, retract the forged birth registration, and sign over complete, unconditional ownership of the estate deeds before midnight.”

Julian laughed bitterly, shaking his head as the walls he had built around Elena began to collapse inward on him.

“And if I refuse?” Julian challenged, his voice rising in desperation.

Elena tilted her head slightly, her gold hoop earrings catching the harsh light.

“Then we burn together,” she whispered. “And your mother goes to prison for a murder she watched happen from the very hallway where you staged your grand homecoming.”

Before Julian could answer, the metal door swung open, and Detective Vance stepped back into the room, holding a freshly printed notification slip.

“Mr. Blackwood,” Vance said, eyeing Julian suspiciously. “Visitors aren’t permitted in the interrogation holding area without prior authorization.”

Julian slowly slipped the flash drive into his coat pocket, his jaw clenched so hard his cheek muscle twitched. He looked at Elena one last time, recognizing the cold, unyielding predator staring back at him.

“The paperwork will be signed,” Julian muttered tightly to the detective, turning on his heel toward the exit. “Release her.”

Vance frowned, looking from Julian to Elena in sheer disbelief.

“On whose authority?”

Julian didn’t look back as he pushed through the door.

“On the authority of a dying family,” he called out down the hallway.

As the heavy metal door clicked shut behind him, Elena sat back in her chair, the steel handcuffs finally unlocking with a sharp, metallic clatter as Detective Vance stepped forward with the key.

“You played a very dangerous game, Mrs. Blackwood,” Vance muttered as the cuffs fell away from her wrists.

May you like

Elena rubbed her sore wrists, standing up slowly and adjusting the collar of her ruined silk blouse with quiet, unbroken dignity.

“The game isn't over until the foundation crumbles,” Elena said, walking steadily toward the exit.
