Chapter 3: The Weight of a Missing Key

The brass latch on the cellar door rattled violently, a metallic clatter that sent a fresh wave of panic through the hallway. Clara pulled Lily tighter against her beige dress, shielding the little girl’s eyes from the dark, imposing entryway.

“We need to leave this house right now,” Clara urged, her voice cracking with the frantic energy of an expectant mother sensing imminent danger. “The stress is contractions are starting, Elena. I can't breathe.”

Elena tore her gaze away from the rattling latch, her mind racing to calculate the legal and financial fallout of whatever nightmare Eleanor was orchestrating. She refused to show weakness, especially in front of the woman who had tormented her since the day she married into the family.

“Nobody is leaving anywhere,” Elena commanded, stepping resolutely between Clara and the cellar door. “This is a diversion. Eleanor is playing psychological games to force a settlement before the audit clears tomorrow morning.”

Eleanor let out a dry, humorless laugh, her pearl earrings swinging gently against her neck.

“Audits, deeds, and bank accounts,” Eleanor mocked, shaking her head. “You truly believe money is the only currency that matters in this cursed house, don't you?”

The scraping sound beneath the floorboards intensified, moving methodically toward the heating vent beneath the antique grandfather clock. A foul, metallic odor began to seep into the hallway, smelling faintly of damp earth and old iron. Lily whimpered, pointing a trembling finger toward the dark metal grate.

“Bunny smells the bad man,” Lily whispered, her childlike innocence piercing the heavy tension with terrifying clarity.

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs, but she kept her posture rigid. She marched toward the grandfather clock, kneeling down to inspect the rusted screws of the floor grate. Her gold hoop earrings brushed her collarbone as she leaned in close to smell the foul air.

“Someone is playing a sick prank,” Elena muttered, though her fingers trembled as she reached for a heavy brass poker resting nearby.

Eleanor watched her with a pitying gaze, folding her hands neatly over the navy blue fabric of her dress.

“It’s not a prank, Elena,” Eleanor whispered, stepping closer to the edge of the stairs. “Julian always said he’d return for the truth, even if he had to tear down every wall you put up to hide it.”

Elena gripped the heavy poker, her knuckles turning white as she prepared to rip the metal vent open.

“Let him come,” Elena whispered fiercely.

She slammed the brass poker into the center of the grate, the deafening clang echoing through the estate—and from deep within the dark shaft, a distinct, mocking voice whispered her full name.
