Chapter 4 - The Kneeling Titan

The cardboard box tipped slightly, spilling a few loose paper clips across the immaculate white floor, but Arthur Vance remained on his knees, his hands trembling as he looked up at Nurse Clara.
"Please," Arthur choked out, his voice cracking with a pathetic desperation that completely shattered the untouchable persona he had maintained throughout Madison’s entire childhood. "Clara, please. Call off the auditors. Take the Manhattan penthouse. Take the yacht. Just don't let the district attorney see the offshore ledgers."
Madison stood frozen in her high heels, her pink tweed skirt rustling as her knees buckled slightly. "Dad... what is he talking about? What ledgers? We're the Vances! We don't beg!"
Clara looked down at the fallen titan of industry without a single shred of triumph or satisfaction in her eyes. She merely adjusted her dark scrub cap and clicked her pen shut with a sharp, definitive snap. "You built an empire on embezzlement, Arthur. You systematically drained the Holloway medical trust fund for twenty-five years, using shell companies to pay for your daughter’s designer clothes, her sports cars, and her superficial lifestyle."
Doctor Vance watched the scene unfold, his expression solemn as hospital security guards quietly materialized at the edges of the hallway, blocking all exits.
"I was going to pay it back," Arthur wept, pressing his forehead against the cold linoleum near Clara’s grey scrub pants. "Every last dime. The market just turned, and—"
"The market didn't turn, Arthur. The children who needed chemotherapy thirty years ago because your hospital wing lacked funding didn't get a second chance," Clara interrupted, her voice ringing with a quiet, devastating authority. "You stole their treatments to buy status."
Madison dropped her white handbag. The leather accessory hit the floor with a heavy thud, spilling makeup compacts and credit cards across the tiles. Her smartphone slipped from her nerveless fingers, the screen shattering against the floor, though the livestream feed somehow remained active, broadcasting the humiliating spectacle to thousands of stunned viewers online.
"This isn't real," Madison whispered, backing away until her shoulders hit the cold glass of the nurses' station window. "This is a prank. It has to be a prank. Where are the cameras?"

Clara turned her gaze from the weeping man on the floor to the young woman pressed against the glass. "Welcome to the real world, Madison. The filter has finally broken."
