Chapter 13 - The Final Confession

Judge Hernandez raised her hand, silencing the murmuring gallery instantly. "Before we adjourn this proceeding, the court has received an emergency motion from the federal detention center. Arthur Vance has requested an immediate, on-the-record deposition to enter a full guilty plea on all counts of fraud, embezzlement, and asset manipulation."
A wave of cameras clicked furiously as the media rushed to process the sudden, monumental development.
"Bring in the defendant," Judge Hernandez ordered.
The side door swung open, and two marshals led Arthur Vance into the courtroom. He wasn't wearing his bespoke Italian suit anymore; he wore the standard orange jumpsuit of a federal inmate. His hair was uncombed, his posture slumped, and the arrogance that had defined his entire existence had been entirely scrubbed away by reality.
As Arthur walked toward the defense table, his eyes scanned the courtroom gallery until they locked onto Madison sitting quietly in the second row.
He stopped walking for a fraction of a second, the marshals gently prodding him forward. He looked at his daughter not with the condescension of a wealthy patriarch, but with the fragile vulnerability of a father who realized too late what he had sacrificed for status.
Madison didn't look away. She held his gaze, her expression neutral, neither condemning nor forgiving, but entirely present.
"Mr. Vance," Judge Hernandez said, leaning forward. "You wish to enter a plea without a trial?"
Arthur took a slow, ragged breath, his voice cracking slightly as he spoke into the podium microphone. "I do, Your Honor. Every charge in the federal indictment is true. I looted the medical trust. I ruined innocent families like the Millers. And I taught my daughter that worth was measured entirely in bank balances."
He paused, swallowing hard, and looked directly up at Madison in the gallery.
"I am entirely guilty," Arthur concluded, his voice dropping to a hollow whisper. "And I ask the court for no mercy, only justice."
The courtroom fell into an absolute, breathless silence. The legal saga of the Vance family was officially drawing to its inevitable, devastating close.

Judge Hernandez accepted the plea, set the sentencing date for the following week, and banged her gavel one final time. "Court is adjourned."
