Chapter 5: Dawn at the Office

The morning sun filtered through the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the Sterling Tower penthouse boardroom, casting long, crisp lines across the polished concrete floor. The room was silent save for the hum of the climate control system. Arthur sat at the head of the long oak conference table, perfectly composed in a sharp charcoal suit. Elena sat to his right, reviewing the final financial summaries on her tablet, while Beatrice remained at home to look after Lily.
The heavy glass double doors swung open sharply, and Julian Vance strode into the room. He looked remarkably composed for a man who had been publicly humiliated less than twelve hours earlier. He wore a fresh grey suit, though faint purple bruising remained visible along his jawline where Arthur’s wooden plaque had struck him. Two corporate lawyers in expensive charcoal suits flanked him like loyal hounds.
"This meeting is completely irregular," Julian announced loudly, his voice echoing off the bare walls as he pulled out a chair without waiting for an invitation. "I demand an immediate retraction regarding last night’s slanderous accusations, and I expect the Sterling group to issue a public apology for the physical assault I sustained on private property."
Arthur did not look up from his papers. He slowly adjusted his gold-rimmed reading glasses, turned a page, and then finally raised his piercing gaze to meet Julian’s nervous eyes.
"You walk into my building with two hired guns and demand an apology after attempting to frame a six-year-old child for your own theft?" Arthur’s voice was dangerously calm, devoid of any emotional fluctuation. "You have considerable audacity, Julian. I’ll give you that much."
Julian’s lead attorney leaned forward, tapping a leather-bound briefcase against the edge of the table. "Mr. Sterling, unless you wish to face immediate litigation for assault and battery resulting in bodily harm, I suggest you hand over whatever property of Mr. Vance’s was wrongfully confiscated last night."
Elena closed her tablet with a sharp click that sounded like a gunshot in the quiet room. "You mean the sapphire brooch that was quietly extracted from Mr. Vance’s coat pocket by certified security personnel while half the city watched?"
Julian’s composure faltered for a fraction of a second, his left eye twitching slightly before he forced a tight, brittle smile. "A theatrical parlor trick. Everyone knows the security logs can be manipulated. I was simply retrieving my family property from a child who had wandered off with it."

"The security logs from the western corridor cannot be manipulated, Julian," a calm, melodic voice spoke from the doorway behind the lawyers.
The two attorneys spun around in surprise as the heavy glass doors clicked shut. A tall, elegant woman with dark hair tied back in a sleek chignon stepped into the boardroom. She wore a tailored emerald-green trench coat over a simple black dress, her eyes clear and unwavering as she walked straight toward the head of the table.
