Chapter 2: Whispers in the Gallery

Julian staggered to his feet with the help of a pale, trembling assistant who had finally rushed out from the shadows of the arched doorway. Blood trickled from a small cut near Julian’s left ear, smudging the pristine white fabric of his expensive shirt collar. He glared at Arthur with undisguised hatred, though he kept a respectful distance from the wooden board still resting casually in the older man’s grip.
"She has it in her pocket," Julian hissed, pointing a shaking finger directly at little Lily, who buried her face deeper into her mother’s shoulder. "The sapphire brooch. It belongs to the Vance estate. It’s irreplaceable."
Beatrice stood up smoothly, smoothing out the folds of her grey lace gown with quiet dignity. Her sharp eyes pinned Julian to the spot. "My granddaughter is six years old, Julian. She does not steal, and she certainly has no interest in your family’s ostentatious trinkets. Check your own coat pockets before you accuse a child of theft in my presence."
A murmur rippled through the gathered crowd. Several prominent business associates exchanged uneasy glances, recognizing the escalating tension between two of the city's most influential dynasties. Arthur did not blink. He signaled to the head of security, a towering man in a neat grey uniform who stood nervously by the grand entrance.
"Empty his pockets," Arthur ordered quietly.
Julian took a sharp step backward, his hands instinctively flying toward the interior lining of his black tuxedo jacket. "You have no right! This is an outrage! I demand—"
Before Julian could finish his protest, two security guards flanked him on either side, their movements practiced and clinical. With swift efficiency, they pinned his arms to his sides and retrieved a small velvet jeweler’s pouch from his breast pocket. The assistant gasped, covering his mouth in horror as the pouch slipped from the guard's fingers and landed with a metallic clink on the floor.
Arthur bent down slowly, ignoring the aching stiffness in his joints, and picked up the pouch. He untied the gold drawstring and tipped the contents into his palm. A magnificent, deep-blue sapphire brooch, shaped like a sprawling ivy leaf and encrusted with dozens of tiny diamonds, caught the amber chandelier light and cast a cold brilliance across the marble.

"Interesting," Arthur remarked, his voice dangerously low. "A family heirloom that was supposedly stolen by a child, yet somehow managed to remain safely tucked inside your own designer jacket."
Julian’s face drained of all color. The arrogance that had fueled his vicious chase across the ballroom floor moments earlier had evaporated completely, leaving behind only the cold, hard sweat of a cornered man.
