Chapter 5 - The Queen’s Gambit

The soft chime of the limousine phone lingered in the air like a poisoned mist. Arthur gripped the black plastic receiver so tightly his knuckles turned white, the plastic casing groaning under the pressure. Through the tinted glass, he could see the glowing entrance of the reception hall, where the warm lights mocked the absolute devastation inside.
"You knew," Arthur said, his voice dropping an octave into a low, menacing register that made Julian shrink back into the corner of the seat. "You knew the entire time. That's why you hated her. That’s why you destroyed my wedding."
Eleanor’s laugh on the other end of the line was devoid of warmth—a dry, clinical sound.
"Hated her? My dear boy, I saved you from committing an unspeakable error," Eleanor replied smoothly, as if discussing the weather. "The Bennetts are curs. They always have been. We bought them out thirty years ago, and we can buy them out again. Now stop acting like a petulant child and bring your father back inside. The press is already pulling up to the gates, and we need to present a united front before the market opens tomorrow morning."
"The market?" Arthur snarled, his restraint finally snapping. "You tore apart my life, you lied about my identity, you ruined an innocent woman, and all you care about is Vance Industries stock?"
"Vance Industries is your life, Arthur," Eleanor snapped back, her tone hardening instantly, stripping away any pretense of maternal affection. "Without it, you are nothing. A nameless orphan picked off the steps of a bankrupt clinic. Step foot off this property, and I will ensure you leave with nothing more than the clothes on your back."
The line went dead with a sharp click.
Arthur slowly lowered the receiver back onto its cradle. He turned to look at Julian, who was staring out the window with a look of absolute defeat.
"We're going back in," Arthur said, his voice chillingly calm.
Julian’s head whipped around, his eyes wide with disbelief. "Are you insane? After everything she just confessed? She will chew you up and spit you out!"
"She thinks she holds all the cards because she owns the past," Arthur replied, opening the door and letting the cold rain pour over his knees. "She doesn't realize I have nothing left to lose."
Arthur stepped out of the limousine, ignoring the storm completely as he strode purposefully back toward the glowing glass doors of the reception hall. Julian scrambled out after him, calling his name over the howling wind, but Arthur didn't stop.
When Arthur pushed open the double glass doors, the chatter inside instantly died. The remaining guests turned in unison, staring at the drenched man in the ruined tuxedo. At the far end of the ballroom, standing beside the wrecked wedding cake, Eleanor Vance waited with a glass of champagne in her hand, her posture as rigid as ever.
Claire was no longer there. In her place stood a tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark trench coat, holding Claire’s discarded bridal veil in one hand and a digital voice recorder in the other.

"Welcome back, Arthur," the stranger said, stepping forward into the light. "I’m Detective Miller. And I believe you have some explaining to do regarding thirty years of corporate fraud and kidnapping."
