Chapter 12 - The Manhattan Vault

The saltbox cottage seemed to shrink around them, the flickering flames of the wood stove casting long, distorted shadows against the peeling wallpaper. Arthur stood up abruptly, the wooden floorboards groaning beneath his boots.
"What do you mean, someone else has the keys?" Arthur demanded, stepping closer to Martha. "Eleanor was arrested an hour ago. Her assets are frozen."
Martha shook her head slowly, her pale eyes reflecting the dancing fire. "Eleanor never trusted the government, and she certainly never trusted her corporate board. She had a secondary contingency vault—not at the bank, but beneath the foundation of the original Vance family estate in Westchester. A dead man's switch."
Claire wiped the tears from her cheeks, stepping forward to grab the edge of Martha’s chair. "Who has access to it, Martha? Tell us."
"Julian," the old woman whispered.
The name hung in the damp air like a curse. Arthur felt his breath catch in his throat. His father—the broken, weeping man who had sat on the floor of the ballroom and begged Eleanor to stop—was the key?
"Dad doesn't have the stomach for it," Arthur argued, though doubt was already gnawing at his gut. "You saw him tonight. He was destroyed."
"Julian is a survivor, boy," Martha said, her voice dry as parchment. "He played the coward for thirty years because it kept him alive in that house. But when a cornered animal realizes the cage is open, it doesn't run. It bites."
Before Arthur could process the warning, his cell phone vibrated violently in the pocket of his ruined tuxedo jacket. He pulled it out with trembling fingers. The screen flashed with an incoming call from an unknown, restricted number.
Arthur swiped the screen and pressed the phone to his ear.
"Arthur," Julian’s voice came through the speaker, sounding entirely different from the broken man on the ballroom floor. It was calm, steady, and chillingly clear. "I hope you and your sister are enjoying the coast. It’s a lovely place to watch the world burn from a safe distance."
"Dad?" Arthur said, stepping away from the stove toward the front window. "Where are you? The federal agents are holding you—"
"The federal agents are holding a decoy," Julian interrupted smoothly, a faint rustling sound coming through the line, like heavy paper being folded. "Eleanor was a brilliant tactician, Arthur, but she was arrogant. She thought she was the only one keeping records. She didn't realize I was the one who filed them."
Claire crossed the room quickly, pressing her ear against the back of Arthur’s phone to listen in on the conversation.
"What are you talking about?" Claire spoke up, her voice sharp. "You let her abuse us for decades! You stood by while she destroyed everything!"
"I stood by because I was waiting for the right moment to reclaim what was mine," Julian replied, his tone devoid of any paternal warmth. "The Vance fortune was never Eleanor's to begin with. It belonged to the Bennett estate before she systematically liquidated your father's assets. Tonight, with your little stunt at the wedding, you handed me the legal leverage I needed to clear the accounts."
Arthur felt a cold dread wash over him. "You didn't call us here to hide, Dad. You orchestrated this whole thing."
"I merely accelerated the timeline," Julian said calmly. "And now, I’m sitting in the Westchester vault with every cent of liquid capital Eleanor tried to hide offshore. By sunrise, I'll be out of the country."
The line clicked dead with a sharp, digital tone.
Arthur stared down at the blank screen of his phone. At the same moment, the small television sitting on a stack of newspapers in the corner of Martha’s cottage flared to life, breaking into a live emergency broadcast.

“Breaking news,” the news anchor’s voice echoed urgently through the quiet room. “Federal authorities have just confirmed a massive security breach at the central federal holding facility in Manhattan. Former Vance Industries CEO Eleanor Vance has completely vanished from custody, and primary suspect Julian Vance has just boarded a private jet bound for Zurich.”
