Chapter 1 - The Broken Banquet

The crystal chandelier above the grand ballroom hummed softly, casting a cold, brilliant glow over the remaining guests. Eleanor Vance stood rigidly at the head of the mahogany dinner table, her beige satin dress catching the light. Her short grey hair was perfectly styled, and the heavy strand of pearls around her neck rested against her collarbone like a frozen tear. She lowered her extended index finger slowly, her expression carved from absolute disdain.

Julian Vance, her husband, stood a few paces away. His brown suit and tie felt heavy on his shoulders as he absorbed the shock, blinking his tired eyes with profound disappointment. He did not look at his son, Arthur. He looked only at the polished wood of the table, as if searching for a crack to hide within.

Arthur stood frozen in his impeccably tailored black tuxedo and bowtie. Tears carved wet, glistening tracks down his cheeks, yet he made no sound. In his right hand, he held the platinum band encrusted with a heavy, flawless diamond. He looked down at the tiny circlet, then back up at his mother.

Across from him, Claire Bennett, the bride, wore a strapless white lace wedding dress that pooled around her satin heels like seafoam. She had been laughing nervously a moment before, her hand fluttering to her mouth in a gesture of absolute disbelief at Eleanor’s public cruelty. The laughter died in her throat, replaced by a pale, horrified slackness of jaw.

Arthur’s voice broke the heavy silence, sounding unnaturally quiet in the cavernous room.

"The wedding is over," Arthur whispered, his chest heaving with restrained emotion.

He slid the diamond ring off his trembling finger and pressed it firmly into the folds of a crisp white linen napkin. He turned on his heel, his jaw tight, and began to walk away. Julian immediately fell into step beside his son, abandoning the feast entirely.

Claire stared after them, her manicured fingers gripping the edge of the table until her knuckles turned white.

"Arthur, wait! You can't just leave like this!" Claire shouted, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

Arthur stopped halfway toward the double glass doors, his back turned to her.

"You heard my mother, Claire," Arthur said without turning around. "The trash has been taken out. And I am done being the garbage collector."

Without another word, Arthur and Julian pushed through the glass doors and disappeared into the rainy night. Claire stood alone at the center of the reception, surrounded by whispers. But as the heavy glass doors swung shut behind them, a dark figure detached itself from the shadows near the catering station, clutching a manila envelope.
