The heavy oak doors of the mansion closed gently behind them, sealing out the noise of the outside world and leaving only the quiet, timeless dignity of the grand foyer. The grandfather clock chimed eight times, its resonant bronze notes vibrating through the soaring ceilings and echoing off the polished wainscoting.

Elena walked slowly up the grand staircase, her hand resting lightly on the smooth polished wood of the banister where Helen had once leaned with such casual cruelty. She paused on the landing for a moment, looking down at the exact spot where Julian had demanded she earn her keep as a maid. The memory felt distant now, like a shadow from another lifetime.

She walked down the carpeted hallway to the study and pushed the heavy door open. The room was bathed in the warm, golden light of the morning sun streaming through the arched windows. Her father’s portrait hung securely above the stone fireplace, his eyes seeming to watch her with a quiet, approving pride.

Elena walked over to the mahogany desk and placed the leather folder containing the final closing documents right beside her father’s private journal. The audit was complete. Every account had been balanced, every fraudulent transaction reversed, and every corrupt player removed from the board.
