THE HEIRESS'S FINAL AUDIT / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13

The rain began to fall in heavy, driving sheets, turning the gravel paths of the garden into slick ribbons of mud. Elena stepped out through the french doors of the study directly into the downpour, wearing her dark coat over her white button-down shirt. She didn't wait for the security team; she moved with quiet, deliberate purpose down the stone steps toward the old greenhouse.

Marcus followed close behind, holding a heavy-duty tactical flashlight, its bright beam cutting a sharp swath through the sheeting rain.

“Elena, let security handle this,” Marcus urged, keeping his voice low against the roar of the wind. “He’s desperate. There’s no telling what he has in his pockets.”

“That’s why I need to be here,” Elena replied over the sound of the storm. “This isn't a police matter anymore. This is mine to finish.”

They reached the decaying wooden structure of the greenhouse. The glass panes rattled violently in their iron frames against the wind. Inside, a single figure stood silhouetted against the ambient glow of the security lights outside, holding a heavy iron pry bar.

Julian spun around as the beam of Marcus’s flashlight swept across the interior. Water dripped from his matted blonde hair down his pale, drawn face. His white shirt, once a symbol of arrogant privilege, was stained with mud and soaked through.

“Elena,” Julian hissed, a desperate, unstable smile twisting his features. He gripped the iron pry bar tighter. “Checking your property? Making sure the little maid didn't miss a spot?”

Elena didn't flinch. She stepped past Marcus into the doorway of the greenhouse, closing the distance between them with slow, measured steps.

“You’re trespassing, Julian,” Elena said, her voice steady and completely devoid of fear. “And you’re standing on private property that was legally foreclosed upon under federal oversight.”

“Legal?” Julian screamed, his voice cracking over the roar of the rain. “You stole my life! You took everything my family built! You think you can just lock me out of my own home and walk away like a queen?”

“You built nothing, Julian,” Elena replied coldly. “You inherited a legacy and spent three years tearing it down to feed your greed. You treated everyone around you like garbage, and you thought you were untouchable because of a last name.”

Julian lunged forward, raising the iron pry bar in a blind rage. “I’ll tear it all down before I let you win!”

Before Marcus could even raise his arm to intervene, Elena moved with lightning speed. She sidestepped Julian’s clumsy, rage-fueled lunge, grabbed his outstretched wrist with her left hand, and drove her elbow sharply into his ribs.

Julian gasped, the breath exploding from his lungs as he crashed heavily against a wooden potting bench, shattering clay pots across the concrete floor. The iron pry bar clattered out of his hand and skidded into the mud.

Elena stood over him, breathing steadily, the rain soaking her hair and clothes. Julian lay on the floor, clutching his side, coughing violently as the reality of his utter defeat finally settled into his bones.

“It’s over, Julian,” Elena said quietly, looking down at him. “The audit is complete.”
